    Bronze Castings Have Arrived!

If you plan to shoot them, figure out what you will use for shot before deciding on a bore size. And try to use a standard size drill as mentioned above; odd sizes are much more expensive.

    Brass round stock... any potential?

Nominal constitution of US bronze guns of the 19th Century is 90% copper, 10% tin, traces as left from the refining processes of the day.

    Book on building scale cannons?

If you make a copy/model of an old time cannon from modern materials (1018 mild steel, for example), the dimensions will give you plenty of safety factor. If you freelance a cannon barrel, make the wall around the powder charge the same thickness as the bore. It can be tapered thinner from in...

    Cohorn Mortar soft report

What is the wall thickness of the mortar? That pretty much determines what kind of load it can safely use.

    Smokleless in cannon??

The kind of projectile used in those smooth bore guns is called a rod penetrator. It is about 12 times as long as its diameter and spin stabilization will not work for that long a projectile, so it uses fin stabilization which needs the smooth bore.

    Smokleless in cannon??

Modern muzzle loading cannon are made from several materials depending on the method of manufacture. They can be cast from grey iron or bronze, or machined from some kind of steel. 1018 cold rolled steel is more than adequate material if the design is good, 4140 is even stronger. Water pipe...

What is the shape of the bottom of the barrel? Dimensions would be nice, too.

This is a drawing of a 10" seacoast mortar scaled to golf balls. Two views are combined into one. The lifting lug is .509" thick.

The Old Naval Seacoast Dictator Mortar

Not quite a model of the 13" mortar of 1861 but one of its smaller relatives, this one was made of 6" material and is bored for 2 1/4" shot.

    Coastal Mortar Replica

Can anybody just maybe give me some info on the original that I have copied?? Although your mount is similar to an 1841 seacoast mortar, your barrel resembles a Coehorn. The 24 pounder Coehorn had a maximum range of 1200 yards with a charge of 1/2 pound of powder. The 13" seacoast mortars...

    matchlock scratch build

The solution will keep forever until the water evaporates or it get contaminated with bacteria or algae. Freezing it prevents the latter. There's no reason you couldn't put the nitrated rope back in the solution again over night and then take it out and dry it flat. Should work fine.

    Coastal Mortar Replica

I have regretted this my entire life ... I don't know how old you are but if you can still learn anything, you can learn how to operate a lathe and a milling machine. Try the vocational courses at your local community college.

    matchlock scratch build

Galvanized Chain Link fence or clothes line or wood fences or even tree branches work well. Hanging the wet match-to-be over something will allow the nitrate to run downhill and leave the upper portion of the rope deficient in nitrate and give it a tendency to stop burning. A better technique...

    Breech Chamber?

So what's the catch? Why didn't more cannons/other weapons use that method? I imagine a lot of loose seals and gas/debris flying all over the place.... Poor sealing and not strong enough for high powered guns. The ones that existed seemed to fire stone shot of not very great size.

1018 CRS is fine. Better stuff is better but not really necessary unless you are planning to take out pterodactyls.
