Drilling on bolster for nipple placement

Have been meaning to ask for a long time. A muzzleloading builder and friend of mine passed just over a year ago. The last time I was to his place, he handed me his .54 Leman to change back to percussion so his kids could hunt with it. He converted it to flintlock, just for fun, before passing...

    Wooden primitive tool

A yolk of sorts for carrying water pails, etc. Hollow part goes over shoulders and goes around neck. I could be wrong, I was once before! :rotf:

    Will a .50 prb go through a bear's shoulder?

.50 cal PRB? Yes. 500 lb black bear? Yes. Through the shoulder? Absolutely not. Heart/lung only and does the job very well. Take your time and aim small, miss small. Not saying it can't be done, but out of respect for the animal, I pick high percentage shots.

Where to buy an entry level small caliber ML

One other consideration: can you get .32 or .36, etc round balls and patches locally without going online or driving some distance? That was part of my consideration with going with my Pedersoli .36. When I run out of supplies, I want some NOW. :surrender:

    Any bear hunters?

Yes, I have hunted bears. In your beautiful Province to be specific. The .54 is good medicine for bears. A treestand set-up would work quite well. A bait pile just brings local bears in earlier (while light out) to get a shot at 'em. Not really to bring in all surrounding bears. They're...

    Finished bag

Looks great! Mine is too clean too. Not after this weekend. Only blood may be mine though :haha:

    Use of Kroil

Used it on rusted parts, including exhaust studs on a '56 Willys. Never on a lock.

    July 4th feasts

What's on my plate? What you just mentioned if I could get there fast enough! :rotf: Sounds good!

    Pack Frame

This was kinda a prototype for me too. Guessed size based on pictures from previous posts. Top of frame is at earlobe level. Bottom is with arm straight down by my side, I bent my hand back in a 90 degree at the wrist. This was the bottom and cut poles to length. Side to side will fit just...

    Pack Frame

Just finished this for an overnight hike with a church group. I'm going "old school" to show 'em how it's done (and test equipment I've made). Really didn't take long. It's made from poplar trees, very light. [/img]

Range time with the TVM/additional questions/Vent liner

Wrap your cleaning jag with steel wool and polish the first couple inches well. Run it all the way down sometimes too. This will clean any burs or rough spots. Doesn't have have to be done again after it's smoothed out, then just shoot and clean as you described.

    Rabbits in the Garden

Sounds like nice rifles and great shooting. Glad they don't go to waste. After tilling our garden, the first tracks in it are deer. Deer and rabbit compete after things sprout! :cursing:

Are you using a lube of some kind? The post didn't mention, so thought I'd ask. It can help.

    Reasons for small bore MLers

I read in "Foxfire" that they started as small bore for economy, but also so they could be freshened later. Once they got to .40, they were big enough for black bear.

Flintlock Shooting test with unusual results

Less powdered=more punch through. Maybe it didn't expand as fast or much and expend energy away from a straight line, therefore driving through more? Kept its mass better?
