Clean-up and seasoning of Dutch Oven?

Oil it good with cooking oil and then put it in the oven at 400 for a couple of hours. Properly seasoned cast iron should be black. It sounds like you are scrubbing the seasoning out of it. The best way to keep castiron good is to bake in it at every opportunity. Wipe it all over with...

    Don Stith Full Stock

Nice job. Who makes Stiths stocks? Does Don make them himself, or does he buy them from another maker?

    Distressing Leather....

There is nothing quicker to make guns or equipment look used than to use it. Wet it then rub the tar out of it with a wad of burlap.

    Lehigh Valley patch lube???

I found a bottle of it in Albuquerque a while back and I like it. It loads easy, keeps the bore clean, and I have found it to be accurate. My only complaint is it is expensive.

Question for you period knife guys

Wick, that particular blade seems as though it might possibly be chisel ground, either that or it is quite thick to have such a thin grind line. There is a notable blacksmith who is highly recognized in this area for his knives and tomahawks, and that is Joe DeLaronde of Mancos, Colorado...

    faking tiger stripes

It sure would do something!! I watched an old guy who was respected for his knowledge in the 70's stripe a stock one weekend. He soaked some packaging twine in alcohol and wrapped the stock with it then set it afire. The alcohol just burned long enough to give a light char, and then went...

    Stock question

Sure appreciate that, I knew I had seen it somewhere and couldnt find it again. I'm planning another Hawken, but want to make it from my own wood.

    Stock question

Are there any of the stock makers that will allow you to send them your wood for a stock in the event you would like a precarve stock from your own wood?

I have a conflict in information and would like an opinion

Most hunting isnt done at 25 yards. Most hunting is done at 50 to 150 yards. That is the reason for the upper load limits. It is your retained energy at range that counts.

Is this rifle an original from c1840?

It isnt a Hawken trigger guard. The trigger guard suggests a Dimmick, which would be period correct.

Need help..how old is this rifle..In fact what is this rifle

It is not a period gun for sure, but it sure does carry a lot of Tryon style and lines to it. Especially the back action lock, the triggerguard, and the forestock look a lot like Tryon. I would park my money on Dixie Gun Works 1970.

    1,000 yards

If you ever attend any of the Long Range Black Powder Cartridge events at Whittington Center, you will see them poking the 1000 yard bull shot after shot with .45-70's. As the guys say 500 to 535 gr bullets over 70 grains of very highly compressed powder. The mid range trajectory on them is...

    Wedge key question?

The pin is under the the escutcheon plate. It kid proofs the wedge pin so it wont come out. There is no spring. It is proper on Hawken and some other rifles. You do not need to take the wedge pins out to take the barrel out, only withdraw them enough to pull out of the under barrel staple...

    Wedge key question?

The containment wire they talk about is an internal pin that goes through a slotted key. The Hawken rifles always had slotted keys with a keeper pin or containment wire. They do not look funky as you cannot see them. Put slotted keys in it, as that is the correct method, and be done with...

    PC WINES and CHEESE'S

Hernando Cortez, Governor of Mexico ordered grape vines to be planted in California in 1525. They were so successful that another Governor ordered them to quit in 1595 for fear that they would become so successfully independent that they would not buy Mexican wine. The wine was referred to as...
