That IS kind of surprising. Back in my RC airplane days, the fuel we used had kerosene in the mix, and we used silicone hose to pump from the fuel can to the tank on the plane AND from the tank to the engine. But, there were also lubricating oils and nitromethane...not just 100% kerosene. So... -

Sad Story
Define "sad". In my opinion, the only sad thing about it is, he paid for a hunting permit, and used it up early in the day. Didn't even get to "enjoy" the season. Going under the theory of a molten metal plug, a powder charge under it wouldn't be an issue. The molten metal would make short work of the powder charge, or vise versa. Not to mention, it would make short work of the person pouring the metal down the tube. :winking: Brad -

"Assuming" it IS a plug of some sort, how about fastening a drill bit to the end of your modified bore brush that you used to clean the rust out? Any shavings that come out would give you some idea of what you are dealing with. Perhaps, enough shavings to try to melt, to see if heating the... -

Perhaps the cannon was never drilled through, and was meant only as a display piece? But then, why the cannon ball down the bore in the first place? Maybe the spike is just flush with the bore, which would be quite a coincidence, but I suppose it could happen. A bit of rust on the inside, and... -

Frizzen too soft?
roundball, Thanks for the photo. That gives a pretty good frame of reference. The gouges in mine are a bit deeper than the ones shown in the center of your frizzen. They seem a bit too deep for only a few dozen shots, but I can probably live with it. My only real concern is that the gouges...- Bradley
