    Jim Malloy “Bullfrog”

Jim passed away on November 24, 2023. He was a master gun builder and leader of the Beaver State Historical Gunmakers Guild in Prineville, Oregon. Jim was well connected with many of you across the country. He had been building muzzleloaders for over 50 years. Jim will be missed greatly by many...

    Shooting way left?

One thing I would check is the tang parallel with the top of the barrel? I have had tangs that weren’t. Second thing to check is the barrel straight? You can use a straight edge to check that. I had a TC Hawkens with a barrel that wasn’t straight and I had to use my hydraulic press to straighten...

    New from Oregon

Welcome from Bend. I’m also a COSSA shooter and a member of the Beaver State Historical Gunbuilders Guild out of Prineville. Unfortunately our master builder has some health issues and we don’t know if the Guild will continue. But that hasn’t stopped me from continuing to build muzzleloaders.

Why would a ML rifle have a high POI?

I bought a used TC Renegade years back for a very low price. When I received the rifle it was in great shape so I wondered why the guy was selling so cheap. Well when I went to the range I realized why. It was shooting 12” high at 50 yards. I looked at different sights but none would do the job...

    Tru oil time question

The suggestion to run a magnet over it after using steel wool is because the small particles of steel wool will rust in time. If you use brass wool then it won’t matter.

    Tru oil time question

I cut my Tru Oil with mineral spirits which allows it to soak in better. I rub it out so it’s very thin and apply up to five coats before I’m finished. My drying time before shooting is 3 days but I live in a very dry climate.

    Gray Steel

I’m sure it’s not just watered down cold blue but it could be a variant with a slightly different chemical. They offer a variety of colors according to their website.

    Gray Steel

I use Sur Fin Grey Steel NS-16. It gives an even grey finish. E

    Question regarding inletting

I’ve got one that I built that I would sell for half that price with curly maple, wooden patch box, and raised carving. His price seems very high to me.
