    Finally got a Bess

My .751 bore likes the .715 ball and heavy denum patch. Loads nicely and misses consistantly.

    Brown Bess for first ML?

I honestly don't remember why, but for some reason I got the idea that mine was made in the late 1980's, possibly very early 1990's. I vaguely remember asking Musketman (where'd he go by the way?)about it a few years back. Think it had something to do with the size of the loops in the sling...

    Brown Bess for first ML?

Pedersoli gets my vote. Having had one for a few years now, I don't understand the bit about poor fit, bad castings, junk springs, etc. Fit and finish on mine is quite fine (IMO). Never had issues with springs, frizzen, or sparking. Ignition is quick and consistant. Inside the barrel looks and...

    Casting Alloy ?

Tried that technique. Quickly went to the .715 steel mold. I can only guess at the wheel weight material. Better to let someone answer that shoots the way you do I think.

    Casting Alloy ?

In my .751 dia. bore I'm using the .715 ball mold and a thicker (0.027ish) denum patch. I've used pure wheel weights for balls before and had no issues whatsoever. Seem to start just a bit snugger, that's all. Have trouble getting them to cast as nice as lead. But they seem to fly well enough...

how to make shot wads ??

Thanks, works for me. As Mike mentioned,, just a quick dunk in the melted mix. Enough to stick the card and slightly lube the outside. The shot side willbe dry after slitting. Satuated will get you to shooting donuts (or seemingly so).

how to make shot wads ??

I sorta do a Mike Brooks thingy myself and feel it's working fairly well. Preparations; 1/2" fiber, quickly dipped into a wax/ olive oil mix, with a overshot card stuck to each side of the fiber. After cooling, slice the fiber in half. this gives me 2, 1/4 fibers with overshot (used as powder...

    Flash hole?

My Peder. Bess is right around a tight 0.098. Been that way since I got it. 3fg runs out, but it has other issues with the granulation anyways. 2Fg is much, much better. Ignition is quite fast and definate. I don't consider it "broken", so I'm not about to fix what is working. I can see no...

    Brown Bess Accuracy

I'm a firm believer in heavy patching. My .751 bore loves a .715 ball. .022 denum patch w/ olive oil & bee's wax. I also use 100 gr. 2fg. Can shoot all day without cleaning bore. A good day will put them into a 5" group at 50 yds. (lets not talk about the bad days - ) I also believe...

    Smoothbore shoot low

Hmmm, How much material are we talking (roughly) to bring POA up 4"? Why not just work one side of the crown? Wouldn't it have the same effect? Thinking a round stone or hand hone here. Interesting idea as I have benn considering bending too.

    Smoothbore shoot low

When you guys file your muzzle, if you want the POI to come up, you file the bottom? Have I got that right? Now, on filing - I've a bit of a lead / crown on my muzzle. Would I need to file past the crow's edge to move the POI? what happens if I re-crown for a lead, do I loose what I've gained...

    Pedersoli Bess Touch hole

3Fg gives me one god awful crud ring that's hard as cement.

    Musket powder

Using 2Fg,,, I'm looking forward to giving 1Fg a try myself.

    why get a smoothbore?

Same as Paulaski Started as fun, evolved to 1 gun for all hunting. Live in New England. Swamps, brush, etc. a very long shot here wouldbe 50 yds. Most are 25 or so. Only exceptions being turf, corn, & potatoe fields.

    Pedersoli Bess Touch hole

A 0.099 numbered drill just goes into mine. So it sounds about equal. With 3Fg, it's "self priming". :hmm: Powder does leak into the pan. However, it shoots much better with 2Fg anyways and is not a issue with leakage. I'm really wanting to try 1Fg though.

    Lefties shootin' righties

Being a lefty, the big thing I noticed was everything is on the wrong side for comfortably loading. Once shouldered, not a real big deal, but that pan on the wrong side is a PIFA!

    Bess load?

"All of you folks shooting in excess of 90 gr FF out of a bess must be more of a man than I am. In all honesty, my load combination shoots best with 90 gr FFG, but I'm too wimpy to shoot that load all afternoon. Anything over 85 gr rattles my teeth and makes my shoulder hurt...and I'm no 90...
