Got the Witworth fixed; took it to the range- more newbie questions

After learning a lesson about the need to lube bullets I took my Witworth back to the range with one goal; get it to shoot with no malfunctions. I shot 20 shots of 60 grains of 3FFF under the 580 gr. hexagonal bullets Pedroselli sells. I ran a cleaning brush down the bore after each shot and...

Ug; idiot rookie mistake, bullet stuck in barrel.

Me too, that was an ordeal I never hope to have to repeat.

Ug; idiot rookie mistake, bullet stuck in barrel.

I got it out; but man was it an ordeal. I bought a range rod and POUNDED the bullet down the bore- it did not want to move. I then fired the bullet into a homemade trap. The bullet came out in pieces. Lesson learned- thanks for the tips. Can't wait to shoot this rifle again.

I have thought the same thing re" swabbing between shots- can you detail your procedure?

Ug; idiot rookie mistake, bullet stuck in barrel.

I finally had some time to take my Whitworth to the range. The goal was to just make the rifle go "boom." which it did- but now I know why bullets are lubed. Not knowing any better after I shot it the first time (60 grains 3F / 580 gr. Hex bullet) 1000 fps, like I said I just wanted to shoot...

Uh, oh, a newbie with a Whitworth!

Finally got my Pedersoli Whitworth ready to go shoot. I am pretty new to the black powder game- have shot pistols (you can see an original new model behind the Whitworth) but never a rifle. I am ready to go to the range but just want to make sure of a few things. I have 580 gr. hexagonal...

Total BP "newbie" needs a little advise on shooting new Whitworth

If I start with just the basics of bullet, powder and cap- do I need to lube the bullet or anything else?

Total BP "newbie" needs a little advise on shooting new Whitworth

Ok, before I get into paper patching- what will "work" in the meantime? At first all I am looking to do is have a little fun and hope for some decent accuracy?

Looks like I was doing the cleaning all wrong- not surprised. I will get some good black powder and follow your recommendations.

Total BP "newbie" needs a little advise on shooting new Whitworth

As I mentioned guys I am a total newbie at this BP game. My only real experience with real black powder was when I first bought my 1860 colt. When I got it- I bought some BP (no idea what it was) and some balls and caps and went to the range. I had a great time shooting my 1860 Colt but the...

Total BP "newbie" needs a little advise on shooting new Whitworth

Thanks for all the advise so far gents, I will look into all the suggestions you have made. I have one question that I hope is not too sacrilegious; I have an authentic 1860 colt and 1858 Remington .44 calibers. I also have a replica Colt Walker.... I shoot "fake" black powder out of all three...

    New guy- new Whitworth shooter

Jumped in with both feet- retiring soon and need to add to the collection of stuff to drag to the range. Been a long range shooter for a long time- Whitworth ought to be a lot of fun. Here to read and learn.
