    Search " Black Chert Silica Specimen " on Ebay. Buy the big black rock looking like piece with white powder on it, and nap a few flakes off it. Its the best you can get, in my opinion. Black English flint is what it is i think.

    This one I made from horse tail hair. Double over the hair and tie it with a string then melt some pine pitch glue and mold it for the handle.

    Char cloth from twisted material

    I think this is what your talking about DPMartin. Just twist the material you want to char and put it in the can. Its completely unnecessary to poke a hole in the can, the gas will leak out from the lid edges...
