    Flintlock First Firing

My buddy was there operating the camera (i.e., my iPhone) and he said he felt something on his hand as it fired. Unlike me, he was wearing glasses.

    Flintlock First Firing

Update: I contacted L&R about the ignition thing and showed him that video. His first thought was to turn the flint over and try it that way. I can try that in the back yard easily. But basically, the answer is to play around with the flint until it works. There's a lot about this hobby that...

    Flintlock First Firing

LOL. I normaly use eye protection all the time for everything. My employer even provides it for us. I have no excuse for not having it Saturday. I guess I was excited about finally shooting the gun but I totally forgot. I just got back from putting a pair of safety glasses into my shooting box.

    Flintlock First Firing

I'm still a rookie and still fighting the flinch! 😆

    Flintlock First Firing

I had a very productive discussion here about my lock not sparking enough and, long story short, I bought a new L&R lock for it and then waited for the weather to cool off. Also thanks to McClura for sending me some proper flints when TOTW decided they were out of everything. I made it to the...

Pan flash - from INSIDE the barrel

Full disclosure: I do image processing software for a living so this stuff is right up my alley. It would be fun to figure this out. But first, I'd better just go shoot the gun. :) But the heat index is supposed to be over 100 this weekend so I might not.

Pan flash - from INSIDE the barrel

Not yet. I waiting for some English flints from TOTW and I need some balls as well. I was gonna wait till the weather got cooler but I don't think I can wait that long.

Pan flash - from INSIDE the barrel

While waiting for some new flints and such I pushed my bore camera down the barrel of my new (to me) TC Hawken .54 flintlock to check its condition. Then I wondered: what does it look like on the inside when the pan fires? I jury-rigged something to protect the camera and made this video. I...

    Amusing/Ridiculous Muzzleloading Misconceptions...

I've heard all these myths also. I work with engineers and software developers (actually I'm one of those too) and engineers are the worst at making confident definitive statements about black powder shooting that are totally wrong. I enjoy correcting them and then offering to demonstrate...

    Is this enough spark?

That's a slow-motion video so the delay isn't as much as it seems. I wasn't really aware of a delay when I pulled the trigger. But, to answer the question, I was using FFF. It's just what I have. It's hard to find real black powder around Tulsa for some reason. Or at least I can't find it.

    Is this enough spark?

Funny story: I did call and the guy (forgot his name) said (and I'm summarizing), "Wait. Let's go over a few things first before you start spending money." He then suggested I go over the lock, clean it, and make sure it's acting right. But first, get a decent flint. LOL. Nice guy. I'll do...

    Is this enough spark?

Quick update. Many thanks - this is by far the best forum I've ever encounted. Much better for this sort of thing than any other place on the Internet that I've found. I'm going to order some new flints today from TOTW. Also, that yellow thing holding the flint in my video is, in fact, a piece...

    Is this enough spark?

Thanks all for your opinions. I have some things to look and try now.

    Is this enough spark?

It never occurred to me that it might be too hard.

    Does this video work better?

    Is this enough spark?

Argh! I’ll fix the video. If I can figure out how.

    Is this enough spark?

This seems like not enough sparks to me in this slo-mo. I hardened the frizzen with Casenite once but only one cycle of heat/quench.

    Shooting Box

Nice! I built something similar - also with hardware store brass hardware because it was easy to get. Brusso makes some very nice hinges (http://www.brusso.com/); also Lee Valley Tools. But lawd, they're expensive. That's another reason I settled for Ace Hardware hinges.

Can confirm - most over-ball lube goes away

I should have mentioned that I did notice one other thing. What with so much excess of Bore Butter, the gun was super easy to clean afterwards. In fact, it wasn't even as dirty as it usually is. Cleanup was done in half the time. Still... gonna go make some wads.
