Problem with ignition on my new Hawken

Remove the nipple, bit of powder in the flash hole. Replace nipple and fire. I spit patch between every shot as my homemade powder is a bit dirty. I always point the barrel down and give the lock a couple of slaps to remove any lose fouling after the swab.

T/C renegade v/s CVA mountain rifle

I cannot comment on the Renegade but I have 2 T/C Hawkens, one flint & one Caplock. I also have a CVA Mountain Rifle in 58cal. The T/C guns are just a better rifle with stronger locks. All shoot about the same with Patch and ball though the CVA is 1-66 and the T/C`s are 1-48 twist. If I were you...

    wheres all the no.11s??

Where have you been hiding. There has been a shortage of caps for years now. I've been using toy caps with a bit of powder in them. Did find some CCI #11 caps but they want $40 a tin, I`ll stick to the toy ones thanks.

    Pedersoli 209 Conversion Nipple

They are just the Red plastic toy ring caps for kids revolvers you get at 1$ shops or toy stores. I generally use the Taiwanese ones, but the Chinese ones also work. What I do is pick out the white paper insert from inside the cap and sprinkle in some black powder till the cap is about half...

    Pedersoli 209 Conversion Nipple

Yeh I`m kind of protective about my percussion caps. Only use them for hunting, mostly at the range it`s the Plastic toy caps that get used but also use those hunting, depending on whether it`s small game- Goats or Deer.

Breech plug removal. Jag and cloth stuck in barrel

Don`t know how many times I have done this with different guns. Remove the nipple dribble some powder (3-4 grains) in replace the nipple. Point barrel up and slap the gun to get the powder close to the nipple. Cap and shoot in a safe direction.

    Wheel weight lead question

I just have a couple of buckets of mixed wheel weights of all sorts. Toss them in the heating pot, skim off the metal clips and anything else that has not melted and then cast. For my 50`s I use .490-wheel weight cast round ball and .495 if using soft lead. For my 58`s it`s .562 Wheel weight...

    Wheel weight lead question

Wow ``Can Shatter`` have never had that happen but will bear it in mind. Retrieved a .303 British bullet from just under the skin on the far side of a Red Deer a couple of weeks ago that had shattered. May have to stop using those, though Millions of Deer have been shot with them here. My...

    T/C Hawken ball and patch

I shoot a .495 ball and ticking patch out of all my 50 cal`s including two T/C Hawkens.

    Substitute caps

I have been using the red plastic 8 shot ring caps for years. Lay the caps in their frame on a hard surface. Pick out the paper insert from the back with a pin. Sprinkle a small amount of fine BLACK POWDER into the caps ( between your fingers) until about half full. Compress the powder gently...

    Bacon Grease

I see Poster being advised not to use Bacon Grease as a patch lube due to the salts used to cure bacon. I have no idea how bacon is cured in the U.S.A but here Saltpetre/potassium nitrate is used to cure bacon/ham/salami and such. It`s the same Saltpetre used in making Black Powder. You are...

8 to 9 BHN lead to hard for round ball casting ?

I will shoot round ball made from pretty well any lead, have even used an old Puter plate, If I`m shooting say a 58cal I will pour balls of .562 when using wheel weights and .570 if using soft lead like roof flashing. The hard lead does not shrink as much as soft lead once cooled.

    Pedersoli 209 Conversion Nipple

Picked up a Pedersoli 209 Conversion Nipple from a guy at work, who mistakenly bought it for his rifled Musket only to find it didn`t fit. I have fitted it to my Pedersoli Traditional Hawken, and it works fine. My issue is only the front edge of the hammer strikes the nipple plunger on firing...

CVA Mountain Rifle set trigger not working

Had the same issue with mine. I shortened a .223 casing and slipped it over the tang screw to the trigger assembly. Took a few times taking the casing out to file a little more length off it but once at the right length all good.

    Modern powder in a muzzleloader

Yep too many hours on the weed whacker (scrub Cutter) this week.

    Modern powder in a muzzleloader

Greif so he used modern pistol powder and thought that was ok. It does not state the load but I would assume in the vicinity of 80-100 grains.

    Modern powder in a muzzleloader

Now from the get-go lets understand I would never use a modern propellant ( ie: For modern cartridge ammunition) in a muzzleloader, I`m a Black Powder Muzzleloader Shooter Period. My understanding is black Powder has about 1/3rd the power of modern propellants. When we hear to never use modern...

    Clean out screw

This subject came up on a Facebook group I belong to and when I posted the so called Clean out screw actually wasn't, that it was left over from the manufacture process and should be left alone I got well roasted. In 30+ years of shooting have never had to remove that screw for any reason on any...

    Flintlock to Percussion

I have the DP Kentucky and the Flintlock & Percussion set ups are just a straight switch over. Swapped from Percussion back to flint yesterday. I`m determined to get that Flintlock working properly, though I know I won`t (flash.... wait for long fuse to burn...BANG!!). Otherwise as mentioned a...

The thread now certainly has no relevance to my original question.
