Had one. Well made, reliable, accurate, butt ugly. Sold it off a while back. My range starts at my porch.

Good true operating load for pietta 1860 .44

I shoot 20-25G 3f. At one time I had a new Uberti 1860 pistol I always crammed full-30-35g. After a hundred or so shots over a short period, I felt that the gun had actually loosened up. Steel frame. 25g tops, ever since.

Suddenly started getting pan flash ?

Not really a common or highly recommended practice, but some folks can tune these to the point where a piece will fire just from sparking into an empty pan. Done it myself just to prove the point.

SOLD DGW Tennessee Mt Rifle .50 Flintlock

Dixie Tennessee Mt Rifle. .50 cal Flintlock. I got this years ago from "Sitting Fox." Never fired it. Appears nearly unused. Frizzen has been struck. Some fool varnished the stock. Some elbow grease and cussing would fix that. I almost returned it, but too much hassle. Shipped and insured for...

    Issue-Rifles With Full Length Stocks

Excellent report. I have a couple of these and have wondered about shortening one of them. Looks good.

    Dixie gun works poor boy

There are what can be described as esthetic issues to these rifles-Some work by someone who wanted to fool with them could clean them up. I use a .490 ball with a lubed patch and 70g of FFG mostly. Sometimes up to 110g for the fun of it. Fouls after about 5 shots and needs a patch or two to...

Dixie Gun Works Moutain Rifle ?

I have one I bought many years ago from the hands of Turner Kirkland. Fired it a lot. Extremely accurate, dependable, with no issues. Suggestions that they wear out or become clubs is preposterous. They are lengthy and a bit muzzle heavy. I wonder if anyone has ever shortened one. I have a...

    Vintage ‘Turner Kirkland’ 40-cal flintlock

I remember those days quite well. As a young teenager I spent a lot of time slobbering over his catalogs. I have a Flint Pistol that is marked the same way. He was a friendly guy and easy to talk to.

Weight and Balance for Offhand Rifle

Eons ago, 1960, There was a local guy who built bench rest FLs and may have been state champ at one time. Very few people were shooting MLs in those days in my rural area. He had a large collection of original rifles, mostly FLs. I remember a couple of very long heavy pieces. One had a long...

    Don't know what I have!!

One way to check for load is to drop a wooden rod down the bore. Mark where it stops. Pull it out and lay it against the barrel If it goes all the way to the end like your mark you are probably OK. If the mark does not line up with the muzzle-goes past it an inch or so, time to look out...

    New Flintlock Need FFFFg powder

Used 3f for years and years. No noticeable slow ignition. Got a couple cans of 4f I have had for eons. Waste of effort to have to use 2 different grades of powder.

    Pyrodex shortage, newbie question

I won't use Pyrodex. It's unholy. That said, I found about half a can in my shed that was over 20 years old. I tried it out of curiosity in a .58 Springfield and it worked fine. Gave the remainder away.

    Gluten Free

Friend of mine is a retired food chemist of some note. She says there have always been folks who reacted to Gluten. In old times, they just dealt with it and kept moving. Most folks in the past had a lot fewer choices or abilities regarding varieties of foods.

    Jarhead

The red dirt is called laterite. I think it has some clay in it. It worked into your clothes and hide as well. Very dusty in dry season and a gooey mess during monsoon.

How long can you keep a flintlock loaded?

I still treat all guns as if they are loaded. There were still old shotguns found behind kitchen doors when I was a kid. Some were still loaded. I suspect each of us has his custom in regards to the practice and will likely stick to it. I recall the "experienced" guy who blew himself to pieces a...

Anyone shooting old time flintlocks such as M1795, Brown Bess etc,...

I would always be worried about the strength and condition of the stock.

How Do Y’All Break In Your New C&B Revolvers?

I take 'em out and shoot 'em. At least for the last 40 years or so. May or may not need a bit of attention after that.
