    2022 SMR build

I haven’t been great about posting, but is here the rifle I made this year. It’s from a blank only store bought parts are, barrel, breech plug and lock everything else made by hand by me. 36 caliber.

    Cold steel pipe hawk

I was inspired by some of the cold steel transformations I had seen so here is mine. I cut down the handle to my taste, stripped the paint, blued and scrubbed it back, used it as a test piece for a batch of stain I’m playing with and added two brass end caps.

    Southern Mountain Rifle Sketchbook

I apologize if this is the wrong sub for this question. My copy of “The Southern Mountain Rifle Sketchbook” is listed as volume 1. I have never seen another volume. Has anyone seen a volume 2 I’m just not aware of?

    Ruger Old Army

I’ve seen many posts here about the old army, and from the limited shooting I’ve done with them they seem like great pistols, but why are they ok on this forum since they are a modern design? I’m honestly just curious not trying to stir the pot.

    Franken pistol number 2

A recent pistol I put together from parts salvaged from a Traditions rifle. The barrel is cut back to 14 inches.

    Jeff White blade

Here is a little Jeff White blade I picked up at the CLA show. I handled it with some scrap maple I had leftover from a flintlock build. It’s a great little blade and I’m happy how it turned out.

    Foxfire V rifle

Does anyone know if there are pictures around of the rifle Herschel House built in Foxfire V? I know there are some patterns available from different vendors, but I don’t ever recall seeing the actual rifle.

    Finished my Smoothbore

My second from a stock blank. The barrel is a smoothbore .50 caliber green mountain. The lock is from a chambers casting set. I made everything else from sheet brass the trigger was “forged” from steel stock with a oxy-propane torch.

    Huntington Museum of Art

If anyone ever gets the chance and is in the Huntington West Virginia area the art museum there has a nice collection of antique firearms on permanent display. Here are some of the pictures I took on my last visit.

    Pivoting Patchbox

Does anyone have any pictures or information on making a pivoting style wooden patchbox? I know the sliding style is much more popular and was more common historically; and I have a lot of information on those, but I’ve not seen much on a pivoting box. Thank you in advance for the help.

    Ramrod hole into barrel channel

While drilling the ramrod hole on my latest build the bit broke off inside the ramrod hole. I cut a mortise down into the hole and was able to get the piece of bit out, but this lift a hole down into the barrel channel. I know historically this may not have been repaired since it won’t be...

    Unique Remington Rear sight

I learned about this pistol on a Civil War history site I follow. This is the first pistol I recall seeing with period custom sights; was this something that was done commonly or is this a one of item? The pictures are not mine they are from the article that the link below is to...

    Original Hunting Horn

My Father-in-law gifted us this antique hunting horn from his family he can remember his Grandfather using it to call in dogs during hunts and it being an antique then. There is the date 1814 scratched on it, but we’re all a little skeptical it’s that old.

    Lock from castings

I’m about to begin building my first lock from a set of castings. Is it better to clean up and file the castings first or drill and tap the holes before cleaning up and polishing the castings?

    Sights on a Smooth Rifle

Planning to build a smoothbore after the first of the year. I have a straight octagonal barrel I’m going to use. Would a rear sight typically have been used or just a single front like a fowler or modern shotgun? This rifle will get used more with shot than PRB’s I’m leaning towards leaving the...

    Pietta 1860 Army

I picked up this 1860 army for a great price. However, it looks like someone tried to beat wedge out with a pipe wrench and the barrel has been scratched up with either sandpaper or steel wool. I’m trying to decide whether to refinish, just leave it alone and shoot it as is, or strip the finish...

    Deer Tine Primer

A small flintlock priming horn I made from an antler tine and a brass line fitting. I usually prime from the horn, but this will be nice for ranges that don’t like that.

    Gourd powder funnels

There was a post several months ago about using dried gourds for powder storage. This got me thinking about other possible uses for gourds. My wife recently got some small dried spinner gourds, and after playing with a few they make a fine small funnel for powder or possibly shot on a smooth...

Joined the dry ball club today!!

Welp, I did it. I was out Today trying to work up a load, shooting three shot groups and after the sixth shot I swabbed my barrel, took a patch and ball, and rammed it home without any powder. After calling myself some choice words I tried to pick some powder in through the touch hole to no...
