    browning

I do not neutralize. I rinse well with plain water. I have never been able to stop after rust with ammonia or baking soda. I expect there to be about a week of after rust. I am fine with the after rust it. It evens the finish up. It will run it's course. When the part is boiled in...

    browning

I have had universal success with LMF on GM barrels. I draw file, then blend with maroon scotchbrite. The bore is plugged. A hanger is devised. I degrease with whatever is handy. Carb cleaner, acetone, degreaser for painting cars, dish soap, just do a good job. Wear disposable gloves...

    Red Mapel

All stock wood species vary in quality. The qualities vary depending on where it was grown. Each piece of wood needs to be treated like an individual. The variations are more important than the subspecies. In other words, you can have some red maple that is harder than some sugar maple.

    Lead ammo ban in Wisconsin?

Simply telling them that Scota@4570 says there is no evidence won't get me far. That is part of the "cheat". You can not prove a negative. You can however invent evidence to support a falsehood. What is their evidence? Evidence.... not allegations or theories. They will not likely...

    Lead ammo ban in Wisconsin?

There is no evidence of any health or environmental harm from lead bullets. NONE! I was working in a closely related scientific field at the time the California lead bullet ban at the time it was adopted. I followed it all very closely. The excuse was condors. The fact is that no reliable...

Breech plug removal. Jag and cloth stuck in barrel

Even if you find a TC plug wrench you need a real barrel vice and V-blocks. Without a secure way to hold the barrel you will ruin the barrel when you try to unscrew the plug. For practical purposes TC and CVA plugs are not removable. Leave them alone. If you stick a patch or jag down by...

    Woods-runner lock alignment

Does the flint hit the frizzen centered? If so, then you are fine. You do not want it to hit the barrel or the side of the frizzen. My Kibler locks are all that way to a greater or lesser extent. I asked Jim about it and he told me it is on purpose.

    Suggestions—> Broken Screw

Those screws are very small. There are no such easy outs. I would try heating the broken screw enough with a soldering iron to burn the wood a little. That may loosen it enough to back it out with half a head. If that fails I'd carefully remove the rest of the head with a tiny carbide dremil...

Woodsrunner, Is this normal for walnut?

The Minwax I have used had virtually no solids. I would not use it on a gunstock. There are tons of satisfactory products. I now use gloss spar varnish. I have no brand preference. Spar varnish, because it works and is easy to get. I dilute it with turpentine and add a dash of japan...

    Making percussion caps

I have had the Tap-o-cap since 1975. I lost the paper punch, recently I sourced a 4mm paper punch. However no roll caps were to be bought anywhere. If found an on-line source. Tintoyarcade.com. The have lots. They are real people who answer the phone and return calls. They are a bit...

Woodsrunner, Is this normal for walnut?

"Easy button" Another option is paste wood filler. NOT plastic wood. Use darker tinted product that the wood you are working with. Do not use water based fillers. I pick a dark walnut color for walnut. You want the pores to look dark. You can fill the pores in on session. The only...

    How to refinish Chromium Trioxide

Based on 50 years of experience, I would not use BLO as a stand alone finish. However, using it as a finish is an idea that causes nearly as much debate as a patch lube, pyrodex, or what kind of oil threads. Do a search on "BLO". I'd sand/ scrape the rifle back to white wood. Then stain...

Removing Factory Finish on Traditions Kentucky.

"Klean-Strip QAR4000 AIRCRAFT ULTRA PAINT REMOVER" This stuff will remove any finish quickly. It is nasty, burns you skin and I imagine it could blind you. Be very carful. Take all precautions. Most hardware store strippers I have tried are junk.

need help with percussion hammer striking nipple to high

Between autocorrect and dyslexia many of my posts are messed up, sorry to the readers. You install a longer hammer. The lock plate probably needs to me moved back. Take the hammer off. Cut out a fake lock plate from paper card stock. Move you hammer around until it is correctly...

Adding brass endcap to Woodsrunner patchbox.

Shape it on a lead block with a polished ball peen hammer. Use gently blows and work slowly. When I did my woodsrunner I did notice the shape was a compound curve. I wanted mine to match the butplate exactly so I spent time making it perfect. I used a little thicker material than provided...

    .69 Minie ball mold Wanted

https://accuratemolds.com/catalog.php?page=31#catalog-anchor HE can make anything you can dream up. It does appear, that others have had your want and, he did it already. You have to make, or have made, the base pin.

need help with percussion hammer striking nipple to high

Maybe the OP can post a clear side view of the whole lock and bolster? Just making the distance longer between the tumbler pivot and hammer face may not accomplish anything. The angle of the nipple is rotated clockwise from where it needs to be. See attached.
