Cards instead of wads for revolvers

I'm somewhat confused by this post. Several different subjects at play here. I can't think of much reason for anything between bullet and powder for handgun cartridges. If there is lube on the base of the bullet it should be wiped off before seating. Using a wad in a percussion revolver is not...

    Rollin' My Own.......

I have read that one reason the cartridges are tapered is so that they will rupture when rammed. I personally have not found any need to break the paper beforehand. I make very fragile cartridges with just a single layer of fine paper, though.

Any tips for using the Walker/Dragoon flask?

It just occurred to me that I still own one. I don't know where it is and haven't seen it in 30 years. Which should tell you how highly I think of them.

    Getting caps to fire reliably

In "Sixguns by Keith" the author noted that he had, on several occasions, had the gun fire while seating caps with his thumb, and that each time it "instantly raised a healthy blister."

    Combustible Envelope Cartridges

Never mind. Era's Gone beat me to it.

I do not have the answer. I hope you will provide one after you have tried these.

    Revolver chain fires

Thank you for that, MikeEasy. That is the first time I have heard or seen the idea that chamfered chamber mouths are necessary to prevent chain fires.

    Rollin' My Own.......

I have not tried newspaper. I am concerned about cigarette paper, as my communication with several representatives has convinced me that unless you have carefully researched your exact purchase you really do not know what you have - and some of it really would be a poor choice for our...

    Colt Navy 1851 Question

Having written all that, and assuming that this is an original gun with original finish, it really is far too nice to tamper with. I am not expert enough to tell, from the pictures, if it is an original gun, but it certainly does not appear to be an original finish. Restoring a previously...

    Colt Navy 1851 Question

Does anyone suppose the owner of this gun would ever sell it? The worries about "value" - presumably monetary value - strike me as rather cold. The value to this owner, it seems to me, has far more to do with his father than about what he could theoretically get at auction. If the gentleman...

    Colt Navy 1851 Question

I recently went through the same decision-making process. I decided that, at least on a navy revolver that is not particularly rare, doesn't have any real provenance, does not carry much or any of the original finish, and doesn't have much collector value, I would refinish it and shoot it.

    Combustible Envelope Cartridges

I was unable to find it in stores. Our (California) stores appear to carry a different kind of stump remover that is not potassium nitrate. I assumed it was due to California law but was unsure. Amazon sent me a bottle of Spectracide with no fuss. Hopefully I have not broken any laws.

    Combustible Envelope Cartridges

Meh. If only you had used wood from the Abajo range then you would really have had something. In all seriousness, you have made some beautiful cartridges and I am deeply impressed. Thank you for your contribution to the game!

Easiest, effective way to clean revolvers

I really like Wonderlube. It works very well and smells terrific! I still use it on my flintlocks and have no complaints. For the percussion revolvers I have switched to Ballistol as it is so easy to just spray it all over everything prior to reassembly. I still am on the fence about "packing"...

    Rollin' My Own.......

I sure would like to know what sort of glue H&C is using. Looking at their videos, I see nothing left behind when they burn a glued "cone" of flash paper. I have not yet been able to achieve that result with anything other than the magician's cement which melts the paper so badly as to make it...

    Rollin' My Own.......

A brief update, for anyone who cares... The flash paper works, mostly. It is hard to get it to stick to itself. The standard Elmer's stick doesn't work very well. Any of the "wet" glues - including sodium silicate and the "magic" cement sold for the purpose - simply melt the paper. The "double...

Easiest, effective way to clean revolvers

I personally completely dismantle the gun after each range trip, pop all the bits into the ultrasonic cleaner, and reassemble with Ballistol. But I only take one gun to the range at a time, as a rule. The competition shooters apparently fill their guns with Mobil 1 synthetic grease, so that all...

    .36 cal

These are good guns. It takes a bit of effort, but once you've got it sorted it should be accurate and reliable. I have "better" guns, but this is the one that often jumps into my hands when it sees I'm heading to the range.

    .36 cal

I would slug the bore so that you know exactly what you have. My Pedersoli .36 has a groove diameter of exactly .360. A .350 ball with a .020 patch is a misery to load and completely unnecessary. I have mostly used a .345 ball with a .010 patch. More recently I have switched to a .350 ball with...

    Rollin' My Own.......

I'm sorry if I seemed short with you in my reply. I was a bit irritated about something unrelated and apparently let that show. My experience with flash paper is limited. I have seen a few subtly different ways to make it. I also have heard that it may degrade - but concrete information about...
