New 1861 Navy by Pietta - jams

Hello rineji, Sounds like you might need to have a cap rake installed. It's a post which stands behind the nipple on the frame, and the hammer straddles it while striking the cap. I know Mike Brackett installs them, goonsgunworks.com. AntiqueSledMan.

    CVA Hawken pistol

Hello Thunder14, I'd check with Deer Creek Products, they have lots of old CVA stuff. My son has one, it's a club. One needs very big hands to handle it. He put his barrel and lock into a CVA Mountain Pistol stock, it's going to be a nice side arm when he's finished. AntiqueSledMan.

    Hot Shot Nipple?

My brother has an old Lyman Great Plains Rifle which doesn't like to ignite with 777, we started dropping 4 gr of 4F priming powder in first. Now it fires every time. AntiqueSledMan.

    Another .32 Crockett Thread

I use an old LEE .308 patched round ball in all my .32 caliber rifles, shoot fine. did they ever switch the Crockett to a hooked breech? My only complaint. AntiqueSledMan.

    Lyman GPR Barrel Replacement

Hello Flint-Hunter, Midsouth Shooters Supply does list them, but out of stock now. Maybe after this Covid-stuff settles down and everything gets rolling again one might be able to find one. I'd keep an eye out on Ebay, stuff does show up there. AntiqueSledMan.

    Thompson percussion rifles

Hello Vince, The Thompson Center's were Great Rifles, Life Time Guarantee and all. I think what their downside was the fact that the Hawken didn't look anything like an original Hawken. Also some didn't like the fact that they used a Coiled Hammer Spring instead of a Flat Spring. They usually...

    Tradiions percussion kit question

Hello Danno, If it shoots, I'd leave it alone. By clearing the bottom portion of the lock recess ever so slight, your lock will tip and align the hammer to the nipple. I wouldn't be afraid to heat the hammer for bending, but don't do it in place. Remember it would be a guessing game once...

    Connecticut Valley Arms help

When they were first introduced they were 1:66, many changes & different Hawken Models followed. I believe the only CVA's which had the Made in the U.S.A. mark on the barrels were the early Mountain Rifles. I posted a PDF, CVA rifle identification AntiqueSledMan.

thompson center 50 cal hawkin rifle

Hello Steve, I've seen nice ones sell for $200, some higher & some less. For target shooting you could get buy with as little as 50 grains, but for hunting 80 - 120 grains is probably a better load. We shoot 100 grains 777 with a 300 grain conical (in one of those plastic things), but we're...

    new to me Crockett .32

Hello Howie, Small bores are fun. Little learning curve as compared to big bores but not to bad. My son & I each have 2, can't have to many. Been shooting .308 patched round balls. Only complaint about the Crockett is it should have had a hooked breech. AntiqueSledMan.

    Pietta 1858 Stainless Target problem....

Hello railshot, It's repairable, probably not worth having it done. Barrel needs to be faced then set deeper. I have no idea who does this, maybe Gary Barnes at Cartridge Conversions. http://www.cartridgeconversion.com/Home_Page.php Good example of the fact that Stainless Steel doesn't corrode...

    TC .32 Cherokee

Hello Bledfor Days, We have a flock of .32 calibers, Pedersoli, Traditions, and 2 CVA's. All I have ever shot out of them was a .308" patched round ball. Very accurate and lots of fun. We always loaded 20 - 30 gr. of Triple F Goex. AntiqueSledMan.

    .32 cal kit

Hello DRameySr, I purchased a Crockett rifle some 10-15 years back for my son. It was a complete rifle purchased mail order from Midsouth Shooters Supply, the web page said "All returns will be handled by Traditions". When it arrived, the triggers & hammer needed adjustment (but in a kit one...

    Range Rods

I remember at Rendezvous years ago, I met a gentleman who had what they called a Wonder Rod. He had a system, if the ramrod was in the barrel the rifle was loaded & ready to shoot. We were chatting during a shoot, he was leaning on his ramrod when all of a sudden it was his turn to shoot. He...

    Barrel Twist Rate Preference

Hello Bent Sight, I have read that 1:48 was an original twist rate, I'm not sure. I know the Spanish Imports (CVA) were originally 1:66 on the .50 calibers and they shot quite well with a patched round ball. I had both a TC Hawken and a CVA Frontier Rifle, both had 28" barrels. TC was 1:48, CVA...

    Barrel Twist Rate Preference

Hello Bent Sight, Twist Rate depends on what you are planning on shooting. For a Round Ball in say a .50 caliber, 1:60 to 1:70 is probably the best. I believe Thompson Center, with their 1:48, was a compromise for either Round Ball or their Maxi Ball conical. AntiqueSledMan.
