    why difference in powder charge?

This is the book (and the experiment) written by "Mr, Robins" I quoted in one of my previous posts (the relevant experiment is described on page 80 of the copy linked to by archive.org). The copy linked to by Gus has that part on page marked 22 (in proposition 7 scholium). Thanks

    Large caliber

My biggest bore flintlock rifle is. 54. I'm not sure it can be called "big bore", but it is larger than. 50 :-) It is a Pedersoli Frontier, with an 8 land, slow twist long barrel. I love it because the gun is really light and well balanced (it weights 3kg thats 6.6pounds). It is very accurate...

    Of bacon grease

I have a theory regarding why bacon grease may not rust a cast iron pan, but might rust a shiny metal of a gun's bore. Cast iron (and carbon steel) cookware surface is protected by a passivation layer that forms when the skillet or pot is seasoned for the first time. In my opinion that...

    .36 Conundrum -- Followup

I too don't think it is that bad. Perhaps the photos don't show the depth visible with an eye, but to me it looks barely deeper than surface rust. I have a dislike of removing breech plugs, so I would try an alternative methods first. First I would probably attempt to get there with a brass...

    why difference in powder charge?

The paper published by the Royal Society itself at the time had a title "Philosophical Transactions". Everything that was published in it is available at Journals | Royal Society with a pretty good search interface. Unfortunately, despite searching using keyword gunpowder I haven't found any...

    why difference in powder charge?

This is interesting. Perhaps it is indeed ejecta(and increased pressure/temperature of gas) that causes many times larger muzzle flash when I load my short barreled howdah with 70 grains rather than 50. Gus, do you by any chance remember the name of the publication they published those results...

    why difference in powder charge?

I think it is both a function of the barrel length and tighter twist rates. I have found my 44 cal remington army revolver likes 24 grains of 3f. It is the amount that is dispensed by my flask's spout so I can load quickly (not for competition use of course). I forgot the exact number for...

Using a lubed cushion wad for both PRB and shot?

I use 3f in calibers up to and including 12ga. The below is what works best for me with it. For me best shot patterns are achieved by using thick cork wads. In my 12ga side by side I use ready made Pedersoli ones. They are 3/4in (20mm) thick if I remember correctly. They have a piece of card...

    Alpha-gal tick virus

This got me interested so I did a little research. I never heard about this product before. However permethrin is available in Europe in powder form. It is sold to be used as an insecticide. Unfortunately, it appears to be very toxic for cats :-( Allegedly it is so toxic to them a cat can get...

If FedEx stops delivering Black Powder…

$30 a pound for Swiss? Wow, perhaps I should import it from US :-) Here in EU last time I bough some I paid $140 for 1kg so roughly $70 per pound, but we have other local powders that are much better value. For example Czech Vesuvit LC that I managed to get for $44 per kg (or $22 per pound).

    Firing the ramrod down range.

Yes, I did shoot a ramrod out of my squirrel rifle :-) There is even a thread on this forum where I have some photos of the replacement I made. It wasn't with a full load. Just few grains. It was years ago when I was quite new to the sport. I had a tight patch on a permanently installed...

    Alpha-gal tick virus

I hope you get better soon. Thanks to your post I found out ticks in Europe too have been found carrying this. :-( one more thing to worry about. The one tick-borne disease that makes me worried is tick borne encephalitis. Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics if caught early. One can...

Yet another question that has me baffled . . .

I have to admit I store all my guns muzzle up. However I take precautions to avoid the oil issue. I leave a very light coat of oil on the outside of the barrel by wiping it with an oiled rag, then wiping the oil almost entirely off. In the bore if I know I'll not shoot the gun for a long time I...

    Pedersoli Missouri River Hawkens

Are you sure it is 1:24 twist? Pedersoli's website claims Missouri River Hawken (both walnut and maple) have 1:47 twist barrels in. 50 cal. I have their Hawken Hunter which is quite similar. My Hawken does have 1:24 twist and 2 in shorter barrel than Missouri River version. It comes with a...

If FedEx stops delivering Black Powder…

What a coincidence :-) I've been waiting for black powder delivery for a while and I just got a text it'll arrive tomorrow. Perhaps if FexEx stops delivering black powder it'll be similar for you to how we get it in Europe(Poland) . Online shops selling it have their own employees do delivery...

Brown Bess DGW/Pedersoli Trade Gun kit

Please post some hi resolution photos of the kit and parts when it arrives. I'm very curious to find out if the as delivered finish is the same as on my kit. If the gaps I mentioned are present on all those kits or just one I got. Etc. I also suggest, unless you have a mental picture how you...

Brown Bess DGW/Pedersoli Trade Gun kit

I haven't built the kit you ask about, but I'm building another Pedersoli musket kit. If you haven't seen it, there is my kit review thread in this forum section. Perhaps my experience can give you a general overview of what to expect with regards to quality, state of parts etc. Someone who...

    Sharps tang sight

The table is for the distance of 100 yards. For 50 yards divide the adjustment needed by half. For 100 meters multiply the result by 1.0936

    Sharps tang sight

If no one who remembers the range replies, I'll calculate it later today (it is morning now for me, I'll have some time in the evening).

    Sharps tang sight

I mentioned raising it only because my front sight is taller. For your gun I would expect it to be shooting point blank if the ladder is flat. This way the bottom of the ladder forms a half buckhorn like this. "Point blank" may mean anything up to 50m. Then you raise the ladder like this and...
