FOR SALE 4 Bore 1859 Reilly Single Barrel

Forgot to mention this is a wildfowler (shotgun). No chokes of course since choke boring didn't come in seriously until 1875 with Greener's work....but with a 4 bore who needs a choke. I'd make an offer but am currently full-up in workshop and at home (Spouse nix).

A double ramrod for the range

I ran across an old pound coin dispenser made out of a shogun shell hull. But that is really imaginative. If I can make them dispense 1/8" wads or 3/8" cushions wads, I''d think there would be a market for them. I'm going to try first to modify my M&M containers for the wads...then will...

A double ramrod for the range

In addition, I was playing with the best way to grab wads on the sporting clay range.....I thought about old coin dispensers: I experimented with dime and penny dispensers....had a couple in the house and they work well for shot cards....that's the way I'm dispensing my short cards now on the...

A double ramrod for the range

I broke my antique ramrod for my 1847 EM Reilly hammer gun. I was heart sick - I sent it out to Ben Simmons near the valley - west side of the blue ridge to be restored. I was in a quandary on a ramrod to use in the interim. My barrels are more 13-14 bore having been honed...about .705." A...

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

Here's the final chapter of J.C. Reilly 5512. I found a muzzle-loader specialist....he calls himself a "gun restorer" rather than a "gun smith"- he restores guns for a prominent dealer in the area...over in the Shenandoah Valley and took the gun to him to look at the loose left hammer. He took...

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

I keep bothering you guys but am more confused than ever. I asked the barrel guy about the hammer (I thought I told him to fix it). He responded thusly: "There are several methods that could be used to tighten the left hammer. I would drill out the old stud, either shim the hammer with...

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

I've played around with it a bit more. I can't unscrew the split screw off the center pin - nor can I consistently tighten if anymore. I think the thread might be stripped and someone at sometime just hammered the end of the pin to keep the screw/nut from backing off. There are not a lot of...

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

I asked the barrel guy to correct the loose left hammer. He did not. I'm "disappointed." Here is the problem. 1). I tighten the split screw before cocking. Hammer is tight. 2). Cock hammer - hammer is tight. 3) pull trigger - screw rotates with the hammer loosening it. What to do?

1861 Reilly made Enfield Carbine - condition issues

I was recently asked by a friend about a Reilly Enfield Carbine. He described it as a sporterized Enfield percussion rifle, .45 caliber, SN 12088. I know Reillys and in the late 1850's, early 1860's he made a ton of them including Serial Numbered guns built by him and non-Serial numbered guns...

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

I am still alive.... Shot about 12 rounds through the barrels today...starting with 55 grains, 3/4 oz, 60 grains 7/8 oz and ending with 68 grains 1 oz for several shots. No problems. I didn't hit many clays but wasn't really trying - concentrating more on the mechanism of shooting a...

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

Just read up on Skychief's load...very interesting and it makes sense, especially out of my old bores. I'll try it. -- 68 grains of FFg powder (pyrodex FS equivalent since I have no idea what is the old powder in my powder flask) -- 1/8" card -- 1 oz 7.5 lead shot -- 1 overshot card -- Fiber...

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

I'll be taking Reilly 5512 out Sunday for sporting clays. Here's the load I plan to try (keeping it at 1 oz shot and 70 grains max with all the pitting in the chambers). I've heard that using the fiber wad creates holes in the pattern. Any thoughts? Could I shoot it without the wad?

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

Rudyard, the former Purdey gunsmith comrade of David Trevallion, who immigrated to NZ about 1965 from London, about the time David came to the USA, is Robert Dollimore. I think he had a shop on the North Island at Rotorua. David is now 80 and cranky and opinionated, and can't get around as...

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

5512 is home. I'll post a pictures of some of the work. The gunsmith did a good job I feel and included packages of 13 bore overshot cards, nitro cards and fiber wads. He had to drill the original nipples out so could not measure them. The nipples are now threaded for 1/4" 28TPI and they use...

5512 is still not back from Colorado. I'm getting a little impatient but time for gunsmiths runs on a different clock. For those interested in Reilly - here is Part II of my history of Reilly: https://www.vintageguns.co.uk/magazine/the-life-of-reilly

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

I received this today from the gunsmith: "I shot it with 90 grains of powder and 1&1/8 ozs of shot,.....it made it fine. Keep it under an once of shot and no more than 2&3/4 drams and you should be fine." I was frankly thinking Armageddon....i.e. maybe could I sleeve it back to 16 gauge and...

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

The gun is headed home from its stint at the barrel smith. I will photograph everything and put what he recommends on the board. If it cannot be shot safely....and I believe he tested it...I'll consider other options. I don't think this gun is collectable...Reilly's generally are not... But...

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

Latest report from my gunsmith: Worse than I thought....still trying to save the gun: -- quite a bit of internal pitting but the wall thickness is quite good - closer to the muzzle you go the thinner it is. 9" behind the muzzles it is .045" on the walls. -- Towards the breech there is...

1847 Reilly 16 bore SxS - Need a barrel expert

Thank you sir.....The complete article on Reilly can be read here (unedited): http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=436538&page=33 Reilly had a very checkered reputation...mostly because the "experts" of the late 20th century couldn't or didn't do their homework...
