So how can I find out what this metal is?

Update - I have a third hard drive to dispose of. I disassembled it (required only a tiny Torx driver.) The case is what I was trained to call "pot metal." I dug through the ashes and found the two previous disks, deformed but not melted, also the aluminum cover plates. So I melted the pot metal...

    1200 isn't so high.

So how can I find out what this metal is?

So I melted aluminum? That is impressive, but I was hoping for tin.

So how can I find out what this metal is?

I had two unwanted computers. I removed the hard drives and set them out by the road, they disappeared quickly. I threw the hard drives in my fire pit, today I found two solidified blobs of metal, each the size of a walnut. I am fairly sure no lead is involved in modern electronics. Does anyone...

    Negativity towards Traditions guns

I am OK with plastic stocks, but you guys who make coffee in any pot really infuriate me. You need a French Press, and I do not care if your persona is British!

    Negativity towards Traditions guns

    This is the right philosophy.

    What’s a “ball block” for?

If you are competing in a shooting competition even modern 22 competitors use something to arrange their ammo by 5’s or10’s. And a ball board, like a homemade pine tool box, looks better with a traditional muzzle loader than plastic tubes and hi vis yellow tool boxes. I’m not arguing historical...

A Very Unique Ruger Old Army

The NMLRA has some classes that are "muzzleloading" but allow a lot of innovation. A friend of mine had a single shot barrel that mounted on a 1911 frame. He only used it at Friendship. So this revolver, although it looks shocking, does not surprise me.

Need help finding a solution for a heavy trigger

I have a CVA, bought used. Trigger was awful. The top of the trigger where the sear bar rode looked like it was cut with a coarse hacksaw. I smoothed it with a fine file and sandpaper. Made a huge difference. It is still not a target trigger but it is reasonable. The rest of the lock seemed well...

Which oil after browning a barrel?

I read this with great interest. As a collector of cast iron pans I am an olive oil fan. But it seems any oil will do. My favorite part was, "To finish the barrel, heat the surface with a torch until it is too warm to comfortably touch with bare hands, about 1250 to 1300 F. " There are some...

The Big Dixie 1858 Remington NM

Grip size is important! 38 special Smith K-frames rap my knuckle badly. 357 and 44 mag N-frames or Rugers do not. If I shoot a 22 cal Smith K-frame I can feel the trigger guard touch my knuckle. It doesn't hurt but I feel the "touch."

    Wad thickness

One problem with chain fire experiments and even with theories is that you are looking for maybe a 1/1000 or 1/10,000 event. So an afternoon trying various theories doesn't absolutely exonerate any specific cause. Even a "lifetime" of experience doesn't prove much. I've never had a chain fire...

    Smoothrifles

I thought (and I'm not in anyway pushing this as a theory) that "smooth rifles" persisted after the introduction of rifling, either as a cost saving or because of the military predjudice against rifling. I'm interested in if that is true and how long the period lasted.

    Made a reloading block today!

Tru-Oil is my favorite but expensive. I like several layers of BLO followed by several layers of Tru-Oil. Saves money. But I am very patient about the BLO drying, it does take longer. I end with carnauba wax, but I know some of you hate the thought of killing those beautiful creatures. And I...

    Olive Castile Soap

Reading this thread I realize that in May of 2017 I promised to report back on my soap. I did not wait the full year advised by "The Soap Queen." I ran out of Ivory brand soap about 9 months later and dug into my homemade soap right then and there. It never irritated my skin. I shave with it as...

    Help with stock

I've made a fair bit of stuff with oak. You want all power cuts. The "Golden age of oak" came after mass production and mechanization. I would never want to carve oak. And I'm no snob but because I've never seen an oak gunstock it would look wrong to me if I did see one. Getting free wood out...
