New Uberti 1861 Navy from Midway. Buyer Beware!

Over the years I have bought Uberti's from several off the retailers. It is not unusual to find torn or scuffed boxes. Those boxes are not sturdy, and are disposable. On a few new old stock items the oil was dried, and I have seen more than one with the red rouge remains around the nipples...

What gun for early 1700's Virginia.

I wanted to have some firearms for Elizabethan through Jamestown era reenactment. After doing some research I built a couple of pieces, and acquired a couple more. That 1600-1700 range is broad, and covers a lot of styles and change. Assuming an English colony, everything from the Dutch...

What size ball for a .75 caliber?

if you look at De Gheyn's Exercise of Arms, the matchbooks were shot with loose bll. no paper cartridge, no patch. Paper cartridges were known and used at the time, but primarily for the cavalry wheellock pistols. In 1607 the bandoleer of charges was still used for muskets. They were not called...

    Left handed rifles

There are engravings for books and such showing left handed calivers in troops in the late Elizabethan era. It is not a reversal thing in the print - the rapiers were correctly hung for right handed use.

Current quality of the Italian makers

Under US law, that is true. However, muzzleloaders are still required to pass proof in Italy, and thier cartridge guns have to make CIP spec.

    Poo Poo Pietta!

A vice, with lead jaw pads for the barrel, and a board through the action or a wood workers wood clamp is basically all you need. Do not try turning the frame by the grip. It really is a 5 minute fix.

    Poo Poo Pietta!

I have had barrel timing issues with both Uberii's and Piettta's. Barrel timing on a 1858 is an easy fix. less so on a 1876 rifle.

60-cal Lever Matchlock Arquebus - WHO made it & WHEN?

Looks like a John Buck. He catered to the 17th century reenactment community. He made a lot of calibers with that stock style. Typically used seamless pipe for the barrels but occasionally used repurposed barrels. T

    Opinion on dog locks?

The TRS lock kits are in reality a bag of parts with some basic instructions. In some cases they have adjusted the parts for wear so you can tune them appropriately (e.g. the bottom of the steel on the large Snaphaunce, which I have built). The parts quality and steel is very good, but does...

    Bayonet for Long Land

Possibly. I have this thing about armor and weapons being functional. I do medieval armored combat and make the gear as well as having my BP shooting interests. I expect everything to be functional because it is often used. Sometimes it is person-to-person, sometimes drill on targets. Have...

    Bayonet for Long Land

Indeed! Seen some originals that look like a cartoon bayonet that got scrunched on a wall. My biggest issues are too soft, or too brittle - have seen references to some shattering. I have a heat treat oven, so as long as the steel is 1/2 way decent I can fix things. T

    Bayonet for Long Land

Thanks. I haven't been able to get anyone to answer at TRS. used to order a number of items from them. I decided to go with some advice I found in a similar thread to contact Loyalist arms with he measurements. They have bayonets to fit. Indian made, so I will need to see what the steel...
