CVA Frontier Carbine - pawnshop rescue

I needed an inexpensive percussion rifle for loaning out to new shooters when I take them to the range for instruction. So I went pawnshopping, for a factory sidelock. I found out that alot of the pawnshops no longer deal with them as it is too small of a niche market these days. Then I came to...

Traditions is the "Harbor Freight Tools" of Muzzleloading?

Their barrels are accurate, but the overall quality is best described as cheap.

Book: "Home Guide to Muzzle Loaders" by George C. Nonte Junior

This has some very interesting load data.

    How many here tried engraving?

I was thinking about teaching myself how to do it. Perhaps do some Celtic knotwork relief patterns on the wood stock of some kit guns. How many here do this?

Sent a request to InvestArms to return their Model 120A back into production.

The patchbox on the Model 120A rifle is larger and much more useful than the much smaller round patchbox used for their Model 120B rifle. They're the same rifle, just different patch boxes really. That and they need to make their new Model 120A rifles with .54 caliber, 1/66 twist, 33" length...

Opinel No. 7, the perfect knife for a possibles bag

Opinel has only been in business since 1890, but the design is a much older French peasants knife. Remove the modern text and I think the French voyageurs would have had something very close...

Keep the tradition alive, take the kids hunting.

I see too many old men at the rendezvous, that means no future if we don't bring in youth. Everyone just needs to take the kids hunting, boys and girls. Also bring the whole family to the rendezvous. Have the camp dutch oven cook-offs, everyone loves good food.

Is glass bedding a good idea for kit guns?

Dixie Gun Works has Brownell's glassbed and Acraglass gel kit for sale with their wood finishing catalog items. I was wondering if it is a good idea to have in case the inletting from the factory kit guns gets too wide and deep.

Birchwood Casey "Rusty Walnut Stain" vs "Walnut Water Stain"

I am getting the Traditions St. Louis Hawken kit for my brother from Dixie Gun Works for a Christmas gift. I am purchasing the Birchwood Casey plum brown for the metal finish. But I don't know if the Birchwood Casey "Walnuter Water Stain" or the "Rusty Walnut Stain" is a better match. I am...

Lots of chatter about caliber & loads for elk, but almost no mention of barrel length, nor rifling twist rate.

There has been much discussion about caliber and loads for big game. But almost no mention of barrel length and twist rate on performance. If you are using a typical factory "Hawken" rifle for elk with the usual 28" length barrel with 1/48" twist rate then one really should be using conicals...

Boiled linseed oil vs raw linseed oil

I was told that the military used raw linseed oil to finish rifles like the M1 Garand, 1903 Springfield, and others. I like the idea of going military standard to get a hard wearing, dull finish for a hunting rifle. I am curious what experienced rifle builders have to say.

    Traditions Kentucky Rifle Kit

I was looking at the Kentucky rifle kit from Traditions as a gift idea to get a friend started in muzzle loading. I like the low price, but the low price makes me suspicious about quality. Is this worth buying? https://www.traditionsfirearms.com/product/Kentucky-Rifle-Kit-.50-cal-Percussion

Prices on used guns are insanely high.

I attended a gunshow and seen used T/C Hawken percussion rifles marked $600, Invest Arms percussion half stock rifle marked $500. :dunno: 28" barrel, 1/48 twist rifling. . . these are $200 guns really.
