What should I get, and realistic expectations?

I think I am ready to find a percussion SxS in 12 or 10 gauge for hunting. I hunt about everything you can with a shotgun, but a lot of this will be for rabbit, jackrabbit, ducks, and geese. I plan to use bismuth shot for waterfowl unless someone tells me this is a problem. So a few questions...

Sights for a TC New Englander?

Where do you find sights that will fit a TC New Englander? Looks like Williams used to make a fiber optic firesight set, but they seem to be out of stock everywhere.

WANTED 4 cavity or 6 cavity .454 round ball mold

I have a 2 banger, but would greatly prefer a greater cavity mold to feed my and my buddy's percussion revolvers. I'd love to find a Lyman 4 cavity mold or Lee 6 cavity mold for .454 round ball. Anyone got one they would be interested in parting with?

    Two feathers loading blocks

I've now bought three loading blocks from Two Feathers and every one is both beautiful and functional. I hunted this Fall with a 58 block and it was really easy to load up and made for a really fast reload after I shot my doe. He is a pleasure to deal with.

Sighting of caps in the wild

I walked into sportsman's today to buy a fishing lure and decided to wander my the ML section. To my great surprise, there was a small pile of 200 count RWS musket caps for sale, $21.99 each. Having heard here that RWS is the shizzle in musket caps, I picked up a couple of tins and left the...

    Nipples and cap fit

My buddy bought a Pietta 1858 tonight as his first BP revolver. I am about out of remington #10 caps, but have an ample supply of RWS 1075 Plus and CCI #11s I can share with him. He will try those on his factory nipples (neither fits my Uberti factory nipples), but if they don't fit I imagine...

What does a turn line mean?

I see revolvers with barely noticeable to pronounced turn lines. What does it mean? Heavy use? Something out of alignment scratching the cylinder? Something to avoid?

#10 cap making die now available

#10 Percussion Cap Maker – Sharpshooter 22LR Reloader I ordered one today. Have successfully used their #11 cap maker and the priming mix they sell to make a test batch of caps and used them on a rifle. So if you are hungry for #10s, there is now a DIY option. No affiliation other than...

How would you size minies for these bores?

OK, so I finally tracked down some pins and sized my Zouave and a round ball twist 58 barrel that I had bobby hoyt make out of a roached New Englander barrel. The .580 pin just barely goes maybe a quarter of the way into the Zouave barrel which suggests to me that it is a .5795 or .580" barrel...

    Red crystals

I was shooting my zouave today and a good portion of the time when I swabbed the bore I found some red crystals on the patch. I vaguely recall reading that others have see similar, but know nothing else about it. What are these?

Anyone used 45 conical on deer?

I am planning on toting my Zouave on a deer hunt this fall, assuming I can get the load work done before the no shooting fire restrictions come in. But I am curious about the other end of the spectrum, namely 45 conicals for deer. I have a TC Hawken barrel in 45 and I have maxi balls and REALs...

    Which minie?

I shot a new-to-me Zoli Zouave yesterday for the first time. It shot PRB quite well, but the bore is a little tight with my patch and ball combination so it takes a bit of effort to load it. The musket came with some minies, so I tried a few. The went into to the bore with just a little...

    Handy 45?

I am feeling my age as I deal with some shoulder issues. Slinging a 54 or 58 ball down the range makes me grin, but the need to avoid recoil has me shooting 50 round ball with light charges to take it easy. I have a 45 barrel for a TC Hawken that I need to shoot, but a longer, heavier barrel...

Boy did it feel good to burn some powder today

We have had near record snow in the month of May and all this week I was trying to cope with an ugly vertigo attack. Have been doing physical therapy for a frozen shoulder as well. It has been since September since I got to shoot my percussion guns. The stars finally aligned today. I am...

    Cleaning a Zouave?

I picked up a Zouave over the winter and I am looking forward to shooting it when the snow melts a bit more. I am used to cleaning my TC percussion rifles where I pop a couple of wedges, pull the barrel out, and go to town. The Zouave has bands rather than wedges. Do I try to remove the...

    #11 vs Musket caps

In a typical percussion rifle, is there any real difference in performance between #11 and musket caps as far as ignition, etc. go? I picked up a Zolli Zouave that came with both #11 and musket nipples which I have yet to fire. Managed to find a few hundred musket caps, but mostly have 11s. I...

    CLOSED Looking for a 44 1858

I am looking for a 44 cal 1858 with an 8 inch barrel, ideally a Pietta. I would love to find one with adjustable rear sights, and stainless would be nice, but a clean gun that functions well would do. Anyone have one they would like to part with?

    Revolver carry safety

Is it safe to carry an 1858 with the hammer down over an empty chamber and the rest of the chambers loaded and capped? Can't really see how it wouldn't be, but figured I would ask.

    Loading an 1858 for accuracy?

I shot my new 1858 36 cal yesterday for the first time and since this was a "learn how to load and shoot the thing" I got 5 cylinders out before the light faded and didn't worry too much about groups. That said, I would like to do what I can to get tight groups with this revolver and I have...
