It happened again today at the public range...........

Love it! Each of us is an essential advocate for our sport! Great work! Gotta love our thumping boom! Was hunting with my 45 flinter a couple years ago about a mile from the house. Very country setting, lots of gunfire all morning (open gun season in GA). I took a doe, and bided my time to...

Provisional hole in barrel is off

Sorry gang, Unexpected family in town for Father’s day and had some family medical errands to help with today. A lot to digest here. As Phil points out, that is the exact cap I have, modifying it isn’t an option. And it’s hard to see in the picture, but the bolster/drum is center in the lock...

Provisional hole in barrel is off

Greetings all, A couple years ago I inherited a CVA pistol kit from my grandfather. I started to tinker with dry fitting components when I noticed the nose cap, when aligned with the threaded hole in the barrel gives a large gap between the nosecap and the 'forearm' and the nose cap sits about...

    CVA Kentucky.45

100% Tack driver. I was given one a couple year ago and it quickly became my main match gun. After a couple years, I finally took it out of service to clean it up. It was originally slapped together as a quick kit build in the 80s was the story it came to me with. If you can avoid it at...

    CVA 45 cal barrel

I had to replace the drum on my CVA 45 kentucky. I used the TOW drum. So far, so good on up to 70 grains.. Buuuuuuuuuuuut, it's a bear to get clean because the fouling fills all those exposed threads. And then drying it becomes an issue as I don't want damp residue in those crevices...

An Egg, a piece of bread and a paper bag.....

My OA experience is similar to @BillinOregon 's except our breakfast was a 1/2 dixie cup of milk, the hard boiled egg, and bread were in a paper lunch bag. We weren't told there was a small cup of milk in the bag..... Between those experiences, and some crazy similar military experiences...

    Fiber shot cups?

Just some food for thought here and pardon the reference to a slightly more modern brand of shooting, only by about 60 years so not too modern. Been loading black powder shotgun loads for cowboy action for a bit. Traditional square load using fiber wads. Had a hard time in the beginning as...

Anyone do a Sitting Fox Muzzleloaders Build ?

I built a Sitting Fox kit a number of years ago for my 9 y/o. Was a CVA squirrel barrel and CVA lock, but the stock (Full length) and all the furniture was what you'd find in about any kit. Needed to finish inletting the lock and all the furniture, shape the stock, finish the brass, etc etc...

    Lee R.E.A.L bullet

I used to use the short REALs in my CVA mountain rifle. 24" 1:48 twist. Then I was hunting with it one year and heard the strangest sound as I was huffing it to my stand... Remember that toy we had as kids.. The plastic tube with a ball in it.. When you tilted the tube, the ball would roll to...

    Ouch!

Update on the Lock, Sent it the lock back to it's maker (Chambers) to be fixed and 'overhauled'. Found and addressed a worn sear nose, refreshed the frizzen (refaced and retempered) replaced weak frizzen spring... The lock is like new! MAN the sparks it throws now! It's amazing how things...

    Ouch!

Huh..... I didn't consider the trigger. Tried it a bunch afterwards to try to replicate the problem. I had not yet set it because I had just fired, buuuuuuuuuut, what if the trigger hung from the last shot I wonder. It did go to half cock OK. I put it there to close the frizzen. hmmmmm.

    Ouch!

Hmmm, Cured 'Flinch' Fever - Check Dryballed Flinter - Check Cut fingers on flint - Check Broken flints on first strike - Check Shot attempted with no flint (fell out) - Check Leather, Lead, and sticks on the ground flint shim use - Check No spark on a hunting shot - Check 5-10 second hangfire...

    Ouch!

Lol, Reading these comments, it seems I might be a marked man for a while. Too bad my middle finger was tatooed with the other, now I’ll be flying dirty birds! I appreciate everyone’s comments! A good lesson for sure. Three days in, the swelling is gone as is 99% off the soreness. Just a...

    Ouch!

We share for others to learn right? Big lesson here is to keep that muzzle pointed in a safe direction when drawing back the hammer! Now I have painful memory to remind me! Ha!

    Ouch!

Sometimes our purpose is just to serve as an example to others on how NOT to do it. I took a shot and the flintlock failed to fire. KEEPING THE MUZZLE POINTED DOWNRANGE, I redrew the hammer to half cock, reset the frizzen and drew the hammer to full cock. The lock clicked and I released the...

What lead do I have ?

If you can scratch it with your fingernail you should be OK. If you can get a set of drafting pencils... an easy way to ballpark it is to try to draw on the lead. If it draws, keep moving up till it scratches or does not draw. The results can be compared to the chart below:

    So Much for Sharing

Pretty much. I’ve seen some of our other ML folks also post frustration regarding the site flagging them for firearm build content. It’s hard to connect with todays youth. (scoutmaster talking here as well) There have been a number of posts on here lately to that tune. The craftmanship...
