Experiments with a properly tuned flintlock

With a properly prepared frizzen and proper springs one should be able to get large quantities of sparks. The pan fire will obviously build faster with many rather than few sparks. With proper geometry those sparks should be directed into the pan instead of in front of the pan - which does...

    Still getting a clack...bang!

Grenadier, You have zeroed in on an issue that shows up repeatedly when I time locks. During a session, I time a lock 20 trials with bevel up and 20 more with bevel down. Sometimes I repeat that again with a different flint type. So a session may have 40 or sometimes 80 trials. I often try...

    Still getting a clack...bang!

Tom, the pic is somewhat misleading because of the fairly large exterior cone. The size .078 sticks in my mind, not sure any more. Also, that barrel stub has been drilled more than once to do additional experiments. Regards, Pletch

    Still getting a clack...bang!

Part B of these high speed videos has Siler locks firing up side down. Frame rate is 5000frames/second. https://www.blackpowdermag.com/ultra-high-speed-flintlock-movie/ Probably faster up side down because prime is falling into the sparks Regards, Pletch

    Still getting a clack...bang!

One other thing. It is a myth that a pan can ignite before the flint gets to the bottom of its travel. I have video of 80+ locks filmed at 5000 frames/second. None do this. Regards, Pletch

    Still getting a clack...bang!

I planned to stay out of this one, but got suckered in anyway. Of course there is a delay with flint, and it can be measured. In timing I have done, I based my conclusions on twenty trials and the resulting average. Timing a flintlock been done since the early '80s and written up in...

    Flint leather or lead

Some time back I tried to see if I could tell the difference between the spark production of lead or leather held flints. The link below goes to the results. (I have not tried a link like this since the forum reorganized. https://www.blackpowdermag.com/lead-vs-leather-flint-attachment-study/...
