    Crisco for Round Ball?

Crisco was used over the ball in percussion revolvers to prevent chain fires, but not sure about patched RB. Expect it will work fine but be careful to get the unsalted version. Someone is sure to chime in on this as well as formulas for mixing with other things to make it work better.

Are guns by investarms any good

Have a 12 gauge single barrel made by Investarms, seems very well made and functions like it should.

    Slings for flintlock

Don't have one on my longrifle but I bought a used TC Hawken that came with the TC studs for QD swivels. Don't hunt with it on the rifle but carry a cheap nylon sling with me and find it useful after a deer is down for carrying the rifle while dragging.

    Thompson Center questions.

I have a TC front sight off a Hawken that measures .473 from the bottom of the dovetail and .385 from the barrel flat section. Finding another rear sight may be an issue but the front sight is a standard 3/8 dovetail and modern or primitive sights should be available, check the usual suppliers.

Value of TC and Markwell (?) Caplocks

Neighbor is cleaning out his Dad's stuff and has these two for sale. 1. TC 45 caplock, not sure what model (patriot?). Appears unfired, no serious marks, no box or papers. 2. Markwell 50, never heard of them, also appears unfired. Don't know how to post pics but can send with my cell phone...

    Lanolin as Patch Lube

Use it mixed with isopropyl alcohol as a case lube when reloading CF ammo, was wondering if anyone has tried it as a patch lube. Stuff is really slippery and should not stiffen in cold weather. Can be had as an oil or as a cream although it may not be practical from a cost standpoint.

    L&R Classic Flintlock

UPDATE: Rifle came today and it is now boxed back up and waiting to go to the PO tomorrow to go back to Dixie. The tiny pictures on the Dixie site definitely did it justice, and the description was optimistic in the extreme. So I am still looking, fortunately no rush as deer season is still...

    Lead Pot temp

I bottom pour pistol, rifle and RB. Started with Lyman, Lee and Saeco 10# and now use a Lee 20#. What you are melting makes big difference in temp required. Run alloyed rifle and pistol at 750+/- and RB at 800. Same is true of molds, aluminum seems to like a hotter alloy than steel to fill...

    Powder under the nipple .....

It isn't wrong if it works for you. Might not be absolutely necessary but I am a belt and suspenders kind of guy.

    Powder under the nipple .....

I always oil well when I am done cleaning. Before using again I wipe out the bore and remove the little clean out screw on the drum or bolster and clean with a pipe cleaner. I also snap a cap or two before loading to be sure the flash channel is clear and have never had a failure to fire with...

    L&R Classic Flintlock

OUCH!! Felt the pain, just ordered a used Jackie Brown SMR style from Dixie, 7/8 42" 50 cal Colerain barrel with basic iron trim (no patchbox or nose cap), decent wood. Given the price on a Pedersoli and the potential issue with their lock figured for for less than $100 more I'll get one that...

    L&R Classic Flintlock

From the advice I got in a previous thread have decided that I need to get something of known quality as opposed to Traditions or Pedersoli. Looking at a rifle from Dixie with the L&R lock and wondering if this is a viable option. Price is at the upper end for me but figure I will only feel...

    Locks

Been wanting a PA/KY style flintlock but not too familiar with current offerings. Have been looking at either a Traditions or Pedersoli. Several used Traditions are on various forums in the $400 range for the Shenandoah but from what I gather they are hit or miss as to reliability. Have not...

    Self contained shot load......

Interesting discussion as I am waiting on delivery of an Investarms Gallyon 12 gauge. Used to shoot a New Englander using the TC wonder wads and needing only one wad for over powder and over shot kept it simple, but time has marched on and the wads are no longer made. Need to follow this as I...

    Thoughts on casting...

The crud collecting on the top of the melt in the pictures is a mix of impurities and possibly tin, lead and antimony oxides. It is possible your lead source was from old lead pipe, have seen junk like that come to the top due to buildup of minerals in the pipe, mostly calcium from hard water...

    BP Substitute Questions

I have used both in several percussion rifles, along with several other substitutes whose names I forget. Pyro RS is used with the same loads as BP, to me it seemed a bit more like 3f as opposed to 2f. Yes, it is more corrosive than BP but the same cleaning routine you use for BP works fine...

    Stock Finishing Help

Alcohol based stains work on birch, or so say many of the posters on the CMP forum (birch M1 Garand stocks), but not sure if it would work on beech. Traditions production rifles have a dark stain, might call them and ask what they use.

    Traditions .50 Cal Kentucky Rifle

Had a caplock, very accurate with PRB, never tried anything else.
