    Irish guns?

As someone else has pointed out, the very early settlers would not have been Irish in the sense that most people mean. They were English sent to Ireland, many as soldiers, and who were rewarded for their service by being “given” the lands of the native Irish. I have never heard of a gun from...

    Double boom.

The patented breech seems to be the obvious place. When I got home I poured hot water down the barrel them swabbed it with a patch until it sucked the water. I fitted a rubber tube to the nipple, dunked it into a hot soapy solution then used the rod and patch to suck and pump the solution...

    Double boom.

It was Swiss no 3 powder, I called it “fine” as a general description. The powder load wad 61 grains which has always been sufficient and very accurate for the 50 yard range I use. Even with cleaning the bore between shots I could still feel a crud hence the bullet had to be tapped home, that is...

    Double boom.

I think this is the best analysis of what happened. And I think the terrible weather and it’s affect on cold steel ie condensation, is what happened. Many thanks for the advice.

    Double boom.

Went to the range today to exercise the .451 Volunteer. The weather conditions were pretty poor, very wet and blowy. I had made up a small number of vials of black powder, 15 or so. Of the 15 there were a number, about 3, which fired satisfactorily, hitting the target, but with a sort of boom...

Lead, think about this next time you shoot!

I’ll stick my neck out and sat, they either all died of lead poisoning or…..non of them died of lead poisoning. I’ll say the latter

Lead, think about this next time you shoot!

I wonder what those huge Tailings ponds look like now. Anyone live near that area in Missour?

    Explosive Cannonballs

But how is a hollow cannon ball made. Solid ball easy enough but how is a hollow ball achieved?

    What did you do today

I marked the depth of an empty barrel on my PH Volunteer ramrod. Taped an area then put orange nail varnish on to make it stand out. It will get 2 coats of picture varnish tomorrow to seal it.

    Gun in Alamo

Where is the gun now? Is it still on their premises or are they looking for it.

Where to buy flints in UK?

Watched history program on the Romans and how they dug deeep to find certain flints. Maybe not all flint is of the same quality because why dig into the bowels of the earth to get what can be found readily on the surface? Great discussion and I’m not a flinter.

Why This Wood and Not That on 18th Century Rifles

My local dealer/gunsmith told me that when he was invited to visit his German supplier, they showed him their collection of Mauser K98 rifles. The collection showed peacetime fine walnut deteriorating into the worst white wood that Germany could muster to make a rifle in the last days of the War.

Not too happy with Brown Bess purchase, best way to fix?

Someone send a photo of a Brown Bess from Pedersoli that is of superior quality. I agree on the wood filler faux pas, unacceptable.

Not too happy with Brown Bess purchase, best way to fix?

I’m sorry you are not happy with your purchase, I can’t help there, but don’t place your hopes in a Credit Card company refund. Increasingly the companies adopt a method like this: a very kind representative will contact you and listen with great sympathy. They will contact the maker/airline...

    Rifle will not fire?

Good job. I’m sure your relieved. I can’t help with the nipple except to say soaking it for DAYS has to be your first ploy. When that nipple starts to round off, another headache will emerge. Good job man, and let us know how it goes.

    loose dovetail solution

Years ago I bought a 1916 Lee Enfield, South African, and the front sight was shimmed like this with flattened .303 brass.

    Rifle will not fire?

The lesson in this, for me and for everyone is: When buying a used percussion rifle, ask the seller to remove the nipple for you. I wish I had done it.
