    Molybdenum grease bore lube?

Don't be afraid of trying petroleum jelly as part of your BP revolver load. I've used it for years with excellent results with Holy Black. No experience with BP substitutes.

    Barrel Ringing

Yes, the paper cartridge goes in ball first and as the breech is closed, the back is sheared off. But, the breech block is not flat faced, it has a cavity in the face that leaves the powder loose, not compressed behind the ball when closed.

    Barrel Ringing

As a shooter of a model 1859 Sharps percussion rifle, having the breech partly filled with black powder bothered me, but it seems to cause no problem. I've read that these rifles were designed to accommodate this partial load, but it is not apparent to me that this rifle is built any beefier...

    .45 vs .50 vs .54

I've got to go along with Rich and Longcruise on this one. Although I enjoy shooting BP rifles of all common calibers, I find that I have gravitated towards the .54 cal.

    Gun Powder "substitutes"

Cyanide is a very simple ion consisting of one atom of carbon triple bonded to one atom of nitrogen (-CN negative). While it is not listed as a byproduct of burning Pyrodex in the MSDS, its presence is quite possible.

Caliber for a dedicated target rifle

I shoot .54, because it's what I have. Caliber doesn't seem to matter much in the offhand matches I attend. The only exception being the occasional failure of .36 cal to knock over steel targets consistently. Fit and balance are much more important.

Those In The State of Arizona

Not familiar with those ranges. When I take my flintlock to a range where other shooters abound, I try to occupy the station at the right end of the firing line. If not possible, I erect a barrier to my right. If this is not practical (maybe too windy) then, if the range is not crowded, I will...

    T/C Renegade in .54 caliber?

Since I shoot paper or metal at 50 yds., light loads of 60 grains ffg work well and are easy on my old man shoulder. I was drawn to the Renegade when an eye condition required left hand shooting. Started with a flintlock, then added a cap lock to the arsenal. The short barrel of the Renegade...

    EXPLODING BARRELS

Okay. We know that a person can blow up a ML rifle, or handgun, by use of smokeless powder. And that antique shotguns, especially those with Damascus barrels, can be hazardous. And that we can find photos of damaged rifles. We are a large group of, mostly, seasoned shooters. I would guess...

    T/C Hawken T/C Renegade

Don't know what works best, but works very well for me, shooting offhand at various targets out to 100 yards is: 1) 60 grains FFg black powder 2) .53" lead roundball 3) Walmart cotton ticking, washed, cut into one and a quarter inch strips wet in my mouth and cut off at muzzle after starting the...

    EXPLODING BARRELS

Back to exploding RIFLE barrels: Have any of us actually witnessed a BP rifle barrel blow up? If so, what was the purported cause?

    Colt’s Dragoons!?

The Colt 3rd Dragoon does, indeed, possess a nice heft and robust appearance. Its design incorporates most of Colt's refinements in ML revolver development. It is said to be Samuel Colt's personal favorite. These guns are great at the range: Attract positive attention, make BIG smoke clouds...

    Lyman GPR...or not?

Del, I had similar fit issues. The GPR shoots very accurately, but is hard to position for a good sight picture. The T/C renegade has solved this for me.

    Great Plains Hunter 54 conicals?

The last I heard, Hornady Great Plains were out of production. .54 cal conicals are listed in the Dixie GW catalog.

    BP Substitute Questions

Good advice: Shoot what works for you (and if its free. you've got to give it a try.) Real black is impossible to buy locally. I highly recommend Graf & Sons (Grafs.com) as a source for all powders, both black and smokeless. They have no minimum order size, charge $8.95 shipping for any size...

Sighting in a new(to me) rifle

Haven't seen this mentioned, but the first thing I wold do is check the muzzle for squareness to the bore. If the barrel is not cut off at exactly 90 degrees, the ball will be pushed to the side upon exiting. Use a machinist square.
