2024 cap update, bad and the bad

After not seeing "caps" used in rifles that load from the wrong end for nearly a year, in the space of one week I score 13,000 ( 6k CCI and 7k Winchester) @ $89/1000. I'm good for a while. Also have 5,500 #11s and 1k muskets.

Ever let one go That you Should have Kept? (p1853 Enfield)

A T/C Big Boar .58. Never gave it a fair chance 'cuz it would shoot the .575213OS minies I was shooting from my repop P53 Enield. The one that HURTS though, not a muzzleloader but still an Enfield... Much sad...

    Laminated stock Thompson Center Hawken

A bit bitter aren't we? No need to take offense.

    Laminated stock Thompson Center Hawken

A numbered shim... Matches the stock, buttplate and patch box too. I'd say more than a shim. I too have seen hot glue and plastic wood. The monster of mass production...

    Laminated stock Thompson Center Hawken

I've got one too. Superbly set up and ACCURATE! Mine is noticeably heavier than a regular walnut stock. There's nothing provable with T/Cs since the fire destroyed all records. I've heard that they ordered 2,000 stocks, built a few rifles and sold the stocks through Fox Ridge. I saw a copy of a...

    Curious chrono results

The listed velocities are the average, so the variations listed are the extreme. The 14 fps spread would be, +/- 7 fps. Frontier! That is an awesome looking homemade Kadooty!

    Your Flintlock History

T/C Hawken kit back in 1979. Knew nothing about building one, and no one to guide me soooo... I ruined it. Was near 20 year before I tried flintlocks again. Any deer would've been safe as Momma's arms... Just never could get one to group! Lymans, T/C's, CVA's, even a couple custom rifles, but no...

What got you interested in flintlocks?

Couple extra weeks to get a buck here in Pennsylvania. Initially. They wound up vexing me to the point of " I will not be defeated!" Now, I have more flintlocks than percussions. Or unmentionables.

Most accurate flintlock rifle you own

I've got two T/C Renegades, with aperture sights, that will scare the devil out of an inch, 3 shots, at 50 yards. Gotta get up the nerver to try them at 100. I don't do my best with flinters...

    T/C Hawken, engraved

The engraving is very nice! Assuming you could find someone to do that kind of work, it's gonna cost ya! $700 would be a good price to me. A good Hawken, especially a .54, is hard to touch 'round here for $500. And that's without the engraving. If ya like it, and the bore's good, GO for it.

My rifle project has just earned a name....

Almost all of mine have names. Only one with a human name is my P53 that I used to shoot Yankees with. She's " Victoria ". Vicky to her friends. My unmentionable is " Calico". She's a walnut stocked mix of blued and... armory bright. My laminate stocked T/C Hawken is "Autumn". I'm waiting on...

Long-range target rifle shooting at the very highest level - almost an hour with Mr capandball...

They say " Never meet your heroes". Generally excellent advice, but for CapandBall I'd gladly take the risk!

    Deer hunting with a zouave

My first 4 muzzleloader deer went down to my Euroarms P53 Enfield and a Lyman 575213OS, lubed with the old heat and dip Bore Butter over 60 grains of either Elephant or Goex 3f. All one shot kills. Messy chests too. Every time I popped a cap on a yankee, I almost felt bad having seen what a...
