How to make a tin lantern

As Cub Scout we froze water in our soup cans to make it easier to punch in a pattern. The lantern is long gone but I still remember the fun we had.

Yes. My wife spins and knits the spun yarn.

    camp boxs

Here is a box I made from pine from the big box store. I used a scrub plane to give the wood the look I wanted and forged the hardware. Finished it with milk paint and linseed oil. Not fancy but it serves to hide my cooler. I'll do it a bit differently on the next one but am happy with the way...

    Beebe ??

You might suggest to your friend to put the original barrel back on the stock. The value of the rifle is e significantly diminished without the original barrel (both financially and as a historic artifact).

    meat on a rock

Perhaps we have the same source. I only use lava once it has cooled to about 800F and then throw the steak on. You can't get a fresher rock that that......

    Pasta?

Fred, the no boil pasta works fine. I've used it at home and camping. It is very convenient camping because you can cut out a step and just load up the dutch oven.

Thanks for posting. So different from what we are used to seeing.

    Cabin project.

About 8 years ago I built a log cabin out on my property back in the woods - a fun project and I still enjoy it. I built it 8'x16' (inside dimensions) and wish it was bigger. It's tight for more than a couple of people once you put a table in it. I'd build yours bigger and I'd do it on your...

    building a outdoor test kitchen

A water tight coating is not a good idea. It will encourage cracking. The oven needs to breath as is absorbs moisture from the air between uses and looses it with each fire. You can cover it with a tarp but I found that that encourage mice to move in......

    building a outdoor test kitchen

Bagman - I built a cob oven and covered it much like you did. What I found was that in a windy rainstorm too much water blew onto my oven and started eroding the mud away. I ended up having to put sides on it. Something to be aware of.

Cleaning a very rusty cast iron pan

Put it in a fire and burn it out. If you get it to a dull red you'll remove most of the rust and other gunk. After it has cooled scrub with water and a coarse stainless steel scrubber.

Thanks for the boiling water tip.

    Cased dueling pistols

I liked the pistols last time you posted them and like them even more this time. Just wonderful.

Duck on a spit and cattail hearts.

Took a small group of teenagers on a "survival trek" last month. They collected wild ramp (leek), cattail hearts and some other edibles for the the evening meal. I provided them with two live domestic mallard-looking ducks. They killed the ducks and cooked them on a spit. The ducks were stuffed...

    fancy Hawken

Has anyone looked into who G.W. Atchinson was? He obviously had some money when he ordered that rifle.

    cleaning old iron pots

You can put them in the oven on "self clean" and improve them greatly. Alternatively you can put them in a fire to burn off the crud and rust. Then hit them with a coarse bronze or stainless steel scrubber.

    Inuit Frame

Very nice - I like it alot. You did a great job. A couple of observations if I may. The original has about twice as many rawhide "wraps" around the frame as yours does. Having more probably helps keep the wooden frame off your back and makes it more comfortable. Also note that on the side of...

    American long rifle

Good start. You might check the wrist against some pictures. Looks like you still need to remove some wood there.
