    Beckwourth Rifle Copy

Notchy Bob- The bore is .560, seven lands and grooves, 1 in 48" twist, round bottom grooves, 40 5/8" long, tapered from 1.250 to 1.125, 3/4x16 breech plug fitted with four inch tang. I relieved the muzzle so a ball would set into the muzzle half way.

    Beckwourth Rifle Copy

There are several threads about this rifle on this forum. I was asked by its owner to make a copy of it. It is now done, about $1000 in parts and materials and over 300 hours of figuring out how to build it, what parts might work or how to make my own and then building it. Jeff wanted it...

how do you begin to even try to figure out....

necci, that was kind of you. I really appreciate your comment. I got two degrees from the U. of Minn, 1957 and 1959. I have another engraving picture, on a powder horn. My niece, Lori, asked why girls couldn't get a ML rifle from me, so I made her one in .45 caliber, legal for deer hunting...

how do you begin to even try to figure out....

I built Rachel a smaller Kit Carson Hawken. .50 caliber. She wanted it engraved like another Hawken I did, which was a .54 caliber. Ron wanted the barrel engraved. I hesitated to do that, but then thought, a mountain man with a lot of time in the winter might have done this. So I engraved...

    Real Hawken or not?

Yes, there were brass mounted Hawkens. I think this one is in the Cody Firearms Museum, though they did not have it out when I examined and measured their Hawkens a few years ago. This photo is from Jim Gordon's book. I built a rifle from these pictures, mine shown above. I left off the...

    Pic of Half stock Flintlocks

Top is a photo of the Bridger Hawken. In the white, my second copy of it. Third, my first copy of the Bridger Hawken. Next, one of my Kit Carson copies with a Pecatonica precarve (too slim in the butt). Last, a .58 halfstock flintlock I built, based on a Hawken rifle. And below, a mule...

    Why brass over copper?

This is a .40 small rifle I built for Eagle Woman, Carole Jackson. Copper and sterling silver. She killed a mule deer buck with it.

    Lock and Breach Plug Alinement

Clamp the hammer solidly in a vise. Heat the inside of the bend red-white with an acetylene torch. Propane is not hot enough, Mapp gas may do it. Lift the nose with a 9/16" box wrench. You can also enlarge the hammer cup front side to clear the nipple. You should be able to correct it...

Is the Recently-Discovered Beckwourth Rifle the One Jim Is Holding in His Portrait?

Nice work, Notchy Bob. Here are measurements I made of the Beckwourth rifle at Hengesbaugh's place: overall length 57 3/8"; Barrel Length 40 5/8"; Length of Pull 14"; Lock Plate 5.2"; Rear Sight to front of Powder drum 10 1/8". Jeff asked me to make a copy of this rifle in its original...

"Man at Arms" magazine & the James Beckwourth Rifle

Notchy Bob, I E-mailed Mowbray Publisher, who do this magazine, and they said it is not their work.

Green River Rifle Works Leman Trade Gun

Cannonball1, you can use a .45 round ball for deer in Utah. The game regs read "At least .40 caliber to hunt big game, with a bullet 130 grains or heavier for deer and pronghorn". A .440 ball weighs 128 grains so the next larger size is legal, a .445, which Track of the Wolf sells. I had the...

    The Horace Kephart Hawken

Steve Wagner- I use a 3/4" gasket punch to cut over-powder wads. I use split leather, which is thin and soft and tough, or an old leather glove. I also use thick wool from a shrunken wool sweater, but that may blow apart. I center the OPW on the muzzle and start it in about 3/4" with a short...

    The Horace Kephart Hawken

I need to tell the rest of this story. After posting this in September 2020, I realized I should not post about the heavy loads I used, less someone else use them. I know they are dangerous. So I posted to Meriwether and asked her to delete my thread. She did not do it. As a result of...

    Laurel mountain Stain

I used Fiebing's dark brown oil leather dye on dozens of longrifles over the years and never had any of it fade. Lincoln's dark brown Shoe Dressing is a little blacker in color, I just used it on a Kit Carson Hawken copy Hickory ramrod last night. I helped a friend build a Carson copy, and...

    Real Hawken or not?

Mulebrain, I agree with you. I also now think the patent breech was replaced. Where is that solder fill you mention?
