    Realistic accuracy expectations

Does anyone know the math when it comes to ballistic coefficients and MOA. I was wondering if a round ball can be calculated like say a 175 gr. .308 at 2700 fps. Generally you can predict that 1 MOA will hold so that at 1000 yds the group would be 10 inches. I know there are a lot of variables...

    Realistic accuracy expectations

I didn't say that I get better accuracy from a smoothbore as opposed to a rifle. I was commenting on the distances that people are settling for in regards to their rifle shooting being within that of smooth bores for the most part, i.e. 25-70 yards. No one has to believe anything I say but you...

    Realistic accuracy expectations

I've been wondering about this topic and I'm glad it's being discussed. I get frustrated with my flintlock shooting ability sometimes. Follow through is tough when you don't get quick ignition. I keep looking at the accuracy that was expected in the 18th century. Flint long rifles were made to...

    Patches disappear

That is interesting. I'll bet the faster twist helps eat the patches. My Great Plains is a 1-32". I've never had this problem to this degree with round ball twists. Can you see machine marks on the lands running across perpendicular to the bore?

    Patches disappear

I started getting ready to lap the bore on my rifle because of the patch cutting. It's usually only noticeable after a couple of strokes back and forth, although after only putting the patch down and back once, you can see abrasions. Anyway, before casting a lap, I decided to use a cleaning...

Also see the thread on "patches disappear". It's related to this one.

    Need to Change Patch Material?

Fire lapping! I was thinking of doing this myself while reading the thread. I have a Great Plains rifle that is doing this. How is the accuracy of your rifle? Improved?

    Patches disappear

I just started having this problem with a Lyman Great Plains Percussion rifle in .50 caliber. The barrel has a 1-32" twist for conical bullets. I started shooting patched round balls and backed the charge down to 30 grains or so to "slow" things down because accuracy was suffering. The patch...
