Finally getting somewhere with 3f load development

It was back in November when I ordered my Crockett 32 cal. There were considerable frustrations while trying to get prepared to reenter muzzleloading from where all I had to order from (as I learned no one sold black powder within 200 miles) then the gun just wouldn’t fire the cap every time. I...

Sighting in a new(to me) rifle

Even an extended base ? You must be kidding. I’d throw up on my moccasins every time I looked at that. I think I’d take it to a gun show and SELL!

Sighting in a new(to me) rifle

I wish you the best. I think having to move the sights that far off line is just not an acceptable solution.

    Dovetail sight installation

The lock tite does sound like the best idea. I just got the same front sight for my 32 and I feel it’s a great improvement. I use a peep sight rear. I just chose the blaze orange.

You mentioned it is new. I suppose the obvious replace under warranty doesn’t work.

That’s interesting. So, just don’t waste powder shooting at 20 yds. I’ll take your advice on that. Thanks !

Finally getting somewhere with 3f load development

Thanks! From this I will learn the importance of searching for the right load instead of thinking it’s just my shooting. I can shoot daily so I should be able to get as good as I’m competent. Do you have to guard against flinching when you use such a hot load? I expect 90-100 grains of fff...

Finally getting somewhere with 3f load development

I didn’t see that you confirmed that you are not shooting a 32 but from your loads I suspect you are shooting a 54. I have a 32 and I’m working on accuracy. I can hit a 4” metal target at 60 yards but just doubt I can beat a 4” spread.

    Look at this mess

Thanks, that’s what it looked like to me. I would like to remove some of the stop but guess that can’t be done.

I’m using the Hot Shot nipple but would bring in the Spitfire just to try. I would really like a taller nipple but guess the hammer would hang up. If I could remove the hammer I would remove just a little of the stop. However, when I removed the action just once, the hammer looked like it was...

I dont know why they make the nipple hole so small either but I don’t think I will try to open it any.

Railshot I’m beginning to believe there is something to the peep shot idea that your eye will just center on the aperture and all you will see is the front sight. I do shoot with both eyes open and even with the size of the spoon I see everything down range. And I just picked a drill bit at...

I’ve really been pleased with my gun this morning. It fired after being loaded all night, then went on to fire 13 times consecutively before a FTF. Then I cleaned it thoroughly with Hoppe’s #9, then lots of dry swabs. The same cleaning to the flame channel and the nipple. Then I began firing...

Very kind words from you PN, thank you so much. You’re sure right about my struggles to get back into muzzleloading. Deciding to go with the 32 started the whole thing. Having forgotten some of the stuff I’d learned earlier when I had a 50 cal Thompson Hawkins. It was easy, plus I lived in...

    Look at this mess

Well, it’s worked really well today. However, I think there has been a problem with the hammer aligning with the nipple from the start (this is a new gun). But I’ve been reluctant to return it to Traditions. One, because it shoots good today. Two, the factory nipple is too small to hold the caps...

    Look at this mess

I’m happy to report zero FTF in the last six attempts. My primary problem was the cap was firing but not the charge. I’ve began doing as suggested by wet swabbing as little as possible. And I couldn’t find any pipe cleaners but made a bent wire and I’m able to swab that fire tunnel better. So...

    Look at this mess

There are some well meaning people on here as well as some condescending know-it-all’s. To those who contributed well intentioned information, I thank you. To those like Moose and red dog I’d like to remind you there are many ways to skin a cat. Like Thumpers mother told him, if you can’t...

I’m using the wire brush method as illustrated. I don’t believe a jag is the only way.

But I also started swabbing with the intention of smoothly pushing a alcohol wet swab to the bottom, then let it soak to a 10 count, then pulling it out once.
