.40 Target Loads for Silhouette Shooting

I shoot a .40 Getz with a 1:66 twist standard cut rifling. It shoots the close stuff out to 40 or so with a 30-35 gr charge of 3fffg using a .395 Speer or Hornady ball. I then go to 45 gr or so out to about 65 or 70 and then go to 90 for anything at 100 out to 130 or so. I will admit I am...

    Virginia rifles

This is a new built Pre war Lancaster..... In my search over a year for details of VA rifles, I found that any attributed to that area had attributes of Lancaster guns of the period. This is one of Clay Smith's guns interpretations, iron mounted: I chose something in between since we dont...

    shot my 54 today,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Wood likely came from Freddie Harrisons outfit. Some of that ash is damn pretty if ya get the stain color right and it looks like Mr. Avance did. That lock should last forever. Bob is an icon in this industry. Is your barrel swamped or straight ? Sweet rifle. Enjoy.

Another Help me decide, I'm new to BP and Flintlocks post!

Go with the RB twist and work on your loads. I am 73 years old and have been at this for near 50 years. I feel like I can speak with some knowledge here.... You can load up and load down a RB rifle to do what you want and shoot hellish groups with both. Particularly in .54 caliber.... I...

New member here, looking for a lot of help on gun purchase...

Where in "West TN" are you ? I am one who looks for used better grade guns for beginners. I do so because the parts are likely better quality then the factory stuff but the price will be higher. Buy once, cry once. That being said the RB Lyman guns seem to be a pretty good deal and of the...

How short of a barrel makes sense?

One might want to also consider the mode of transportation used by the buyers of said "trade guns." As time went from foot traffic while trapping to canoe and foot travel and then on to horse back the needs or preferences changed. Why was the short or shorter barreled so called mountain rifle...

    Ringing the gong!

200 is a good haul. I remember the first two years that Art Ressel (the orig Hawken Shop) brought the silhouettes to Friendship. A bunch of the shed shooters went over there and did good on the stuff out to 100 but fell on their faces until they could get their "dial a prayer" sights and loads...

    swamped barrel load

OK.... So, this is a .50 cal B weight barrel. First thing I would want to know is what is the twist rate. As was stated above, the pressures at the waist are much lower then the pressures at the breech. Swamped barrels were designed to have heavy breech weight and then reduce and then...

    Sell me on the .40

I have and shoot a 40 regularly. It has a barrel that I ordered from Getz years ago and had it rifled 1:72. Yea, I know, what the heck did he do that for. Well it shoots 20 gr. of 3fff like a powder puff for squirrels etc and then can shoot a hole through a hardened disk coulter at 100 yards...

    What is your hunting rifle?

My old stand by is a .54 Sharon Hawken half stock with Hawken Shop hardware and a Sharon barrel. I have taken a good number of deer with this gun using .535 Hornady RB's with spit patch and 70 gr. 3ff. However, I have a new gun in the offing which will be an early Virginia, iron mounted .620...

    All around sb for hunting?

I am shooting a 62 smooth rifle and a 62 fowler. You can fool around with ball sizes until you find a load that works well for "that" gun and go from there. I have a new 62 smooth rifle on the way built with and old (like at least 30 years) Getz swamped barrel in the early Virginia style on a...

    smoothbore loading

I load loose. Powder, patch ball. If its shot its powder, card, wad (lubed), shot, card. Not into the re-enactor/military paper cartridge mode at all. Have loaded smooth bores this way for about 50 years. Just sayin.....
