    Doglock questions

Many people seem to think original dog locks didnt have a half cock notch, they certainly did as you pointed out. They had the dog catches because they didnt trust the quality of their steel.

    Doglock questions

All the dog lock’s I’ve assembled from the rifle shoppe have a half cock notch with the exception of 2 of them which are much earlier patterns with a lateral sear. Furthermore, all the original dog lock’s I’ve reviewed all had half cock notches. Indian made Dog Locks often do not have a...

Springfield Model 1795 Barrel Band Spring Repair or Replace

I’ve made them by hand, not too difficult to do I saw cut the blank or attach a pin to bolster, the spring body, three are a few ways to do it. As far as welding a broken band spring, it can be done but you need a very small torch with a #2 tip that produces a small 2-3mm feather. Spot...

Charleville Musket - Which One Used by Continentals?

You’ll certainly find a lot of 1717 -1754 parts on random american restocked guns, its not uncommon find muskets with per say for example a 1717 lock, and 1754 hardware such as bands and a steel rammer. We also tend to view this from the perspective of infantry arms, when in-fact there were...

Charleville Musket - Which One Used by Continentals?

Most of the charleville muskets used in the revolutionary war were of the heavy model 1763 and 1766 & 1768 patterns. The french emptied nearly their entire arsenal of these muskets. Its possible some 1754’s came over but there isnt enough of them to say how significant. The models 1770-1776...

    Proper metal finish for matchlock

I would do a single cut smooth file finish or a stoned finish with a 180-220 die maker’s oil stone.

How you clean pan & frizzen?

I just brush and pick as i go and need. i woudln't’ use a damp wrag. With the last shot fired for the day, i take advantage of the heat that is left over in the pan and breech, the area generally wipes out fine.

    Suggestions—> Broken Screw

I would cut a slot in it with a small cutting bit on a rotary tool, just do it on slow speeds so the tool doesn’t wander. On the plus side the area is pretty well hidden once it’s fixed. I would take extra care into not damaging the rest of the stock while cutting the slot in the screw.

Pecatonica NW Trade Gun Build Help

Northwest trade guns are often called easier builds i think because they have less parts, and less details. For the experienced builder they’re … easier. They use simple hardware, some have a serpentine side plate which can be inlet or just placed on the stock. There’s usually two rammer...

    Underlug hole elongation...

I’ve disassembled original guns 250-300 years old, i have original barrels and guns in my collection, none of their underlugs are slotted to prevent the gun from breaking, they’re just drilled. The lugs are cut through the rammer channels. Bear in mind these are military guns mostly, But I’ve...

    Underlug hole elongation...

Yes, and yes, and I’ve never noticed anything. I have been caught in poor weather, i just choose not to take my good stuff out if I already know before hand the weather is poor. I will say that I also do not own any rifles with cross grained wood, such as curly maple. I prefer straight grained...

Or if you don’t shoot in the rain, you may never notice it. the only gun i use in the rain or damp conditions is a 1766 charleville and an 1816 musket.
