    Young shooter, first .44

Yeah, the carrying of a pistol while stalking or buck hunting is for general protection in emergencies. There are lots of bear where we hike the hills, and we regularly see at least two different "big cat" prints the last 5 or 6 years, so it makes sense when crawling around brushy slopes or...

    Young shooter, first .44

Definitely a great idea to know which laws one may run afoul of, drobs. We hunt and hike on private timberlands in northern California, some forays onto national forest lands. It is all quite remote and our interaction with LE and other hunters and miners is collegial and supportive, but rare .

General Questions to do with Cap & Ball Revolver

Right? Mine are like, 153 years outdated then!

New to cap & ball revolvers

Welcome to Cap and Ball shooting fun. I like the aesthetic balance of the Sheriffs Model, but have spent years with an 8" barrel in my hand, gotten pretty comfortable. Hope to see a "range report" from you soon! May I also encourage you to check out Mark Hubbs' videos, Eras Gone for the...

    original style combustibles my way

Had a great snow day, icy roads and no school for the kids so I fired up the lead pot. Cast about 350 J&D conicals, then spent the afternoon building cartridges.

    4F in .31 1849

By volume? Hmm. I build my paper cartridges with about 22 to 23 grns Goex for an original Remington. Shoots great. BTW, thanks to Eras Gone for the excellent mold for casting bullets.

    4F in .31 1849

Ah, the lawyers will be the death of the Empire. Any discussion regarding safe and acceptable practices for black powder pistols gets a thorough reading by me. Looking forward to acquiring an 1849, already bought a pound of FFFFg. Now about those heeled conical bullets....

    Chain fire

Bought my first CnB pistol in the 1980's, currently shoot the Hell out of an original NMA. I've used loose ball and powder, played with Pyrodex and other synthetics as well. Literally have fired thousands of rounds in many different pistols and under a variety of conditions... I've never had a...

BP Revolvers....What Am I Doing Wrong??!?!

I own and shoot a Remington NMA. For extended playing at the range, I will put a few drops of Kroil on the arbor, front and rear. Sometimes up to 50 or 60 rounds. I shoot paper cartridges, (as these guns were designed for), about 25 to 27 grains of 3f by volume under a 200gr Johnston and Dow...

    Springfield 1816 with unusual configuration

Picked this up very inexpensive at my local GS. Careful disassembly today to see any covered up marks. I did not scuff/sand the breech, that was before I took possession. The bright area "cleaned" on the breech shows a faint '1854' and some other numbers or letters. All other stamps and marks...

Hello from the Motherlode region, California

Coming here to get some knowledge and information. My muzzleloaders are an 1851 Whitney contract rifle and a Remington New Model from the lot delivered to the War Dept January of 1864. Pistol is a shooter now, rifle needs a lot, but I will get there. I was raised by a vet who was raised by a vet...
