10.38 oz vs 13 oz Sunforger?

Looking at buying a 10' x 10' single pole pyramid for rondevous. Torn between the 10.38 and 13 oz Sunforger. Would prefer something that would last but don't know if the 13 oz is overkill.

    Touch hole diameter.

Started work on my matchlock. It comes from Military Heritage without the touch hole drilled. Is it safe to assume that 1/16" is a good starting point just like with flintlocks? Or do I need to go larger? I have a good set of fractional and numbered bits to choose from. Thanks.

    Proper metal finish for matchlock

My matchlock came in yesterday. It overall was better than expected as it is an Indian made musket. However there are a few small faults to be corrected (as I expected). I ordered this one, it is the crossbow lever model- https://militaryheritage.com/musket15.htm My biggest complaint is the...

I have bought my first matchlock. This one in fact- https://militaryheritage.com/musket15.htm I ordered the lever model. It will take a couple weeks before I recieve it. I would like to make some slow match prior to recieving it. I have read about bucking the match in wood ash and also...

A rifle that needs swabbed after every shot on a woodswalk??

What to do with all the patches?? So my new .45 rifle needs swabbed after every shot to remove a nasty crud ring or seating pressure varies and fliers occur. Swab after every shot and it is accurate. Powder does not matter. Shuetzen fffg, Goex fffg, or Pyrodex P. Powder amount does not matter...

Washing sizing out of material change thickness?

When purchasing cotton fabric at a fabric store, does washing the sizing out change the thickness of the fabric. For example if some cotton drill was .020" when measure compressed in a mike or calipers in the store, would it still be roughly .020" after washing? Not going to quibble over .001"...

I'm done with EMSS patch material.

This is now the second time in a year I've bought Eastern Maine bulk patch material and it's not even close to advertised thickness. The first time was their .015" material. It actually mikes out at .011". Well that's ok I thought, because I also needed some .010" for pistols. No biggie other...

A word to the wise, listen to the old farts once in awhile..

I acquired a 20/62 cal back a few years ago. I have shot it quite a bit with birdshot the last few years but not a single ball. I went to the club on yesterday intending on working up a bare ball load for it just like my other smoothbore. Yeah.....that did not work out at all. Could barely keep...

    Underhammer .32pistol max load

Picked up a really nice underhammer .32 pistol from TOTW. What would be a reasonable max load of fffg and a prb? I'm thinking 20-25 grs. Thanks. This is the pistol- https://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/496/1/AAU-856

    Broken/chipped out full cock notch

I recently purchased a new Pedersoli 10 gauge sxs from Dixie. After the sixth shot the left lock's full cock notch on the tumbler broke/chipped out. The hammer will not hold at all on full cock. I do have a replacement coming from Flintlocks Etc that I paid for ($51.95 shipped) and Pedersoli...

    FFFFg powder priming

I'm doing some inventory of supplies. Here is my dumb question of the day. How many average pan primes can nearly 4# of FFFFg powder do? It's actually 3# 14.6 ounces net weight. My pan primer is a very small bag flask (a Philadelphia model) and I just dump what looks to be appropriate for my...

    My thoughts/opinions on cap making

We all know #10/#11 caps are near impossible to find. And will be for the near future. Much has been said about the 22Reloader dies and primer compound. In my opinion if you are not making caps you are in a tough spot. I have have had both the #10 and #11 cap dies and primer compound for over 1...

Wish me luck on new rifle.

Ordered a new Traditions Crockett today. Vendor said he would be willing to sort through the 4 he had to send me a 'nice' one. Wish me luck on getting a nice one. Like any production rifle, quality control at factory can be quite hit or miss. These rifles have been scarce as hens teeth for the...

    .45 cal deer loads

I have the opportunity to buy a fine used flintlock .45 cal rifle at a fair price. The seller thinks the rifling is 1/66. it is a lightly used Douglas barrel. This purchase for me would equal a fine custom made .45 cal flintlock rifle. I can use this for target use at the longrifle club I...

    Smoke and Fire Trading Co???

In this unfortunate age of scam artists and dishonorable people popping up everywhere, I need some opinions on a vendor. Smoke and Fire Trading Co located in Ohio. T/C 12g New Englander max safe loads

I've acquired an new old stock New Englander kit that I will be putting together. The manual included does not cover loads for the shotgun. I found through an internet search, a T/C manual that is highly 'censored'. The site wants you to pay for the info. T/C no longer offers manuals for these...

    Cleaning up cast tomahawk head?

I have a TOTW 'Iroqouis' tomahawk head that I am working on. It is a cast 4140 head. I have filed off the sprue and have draw filed off the mold parting lines on the top and bottom edges. No problems there. However what should be done with sides of the hawk? Being cast, it has a slightly rough...

    Patched undersized balls

So I'm a cheapskate to a fault at times. Many years ago I was given a few ball molds. Mostly Lee but there was one Rapine and one Lyman. The Rapine is a nominal .670". I own two 12 gauge smoothbores. One mikes .722" the other is .728". The Rapine casts pure lead balls at .672". I on a whim dug...
