    Your first ML rifle

My only point in mentioning that above is....there are many who favor those new fangled inline plastic/stainless models and swear their accuracy surpassed a traditional sidelock..ive found that to be not accurate. Dont get me wrong; I love and appreciate all firearms - both traditional and...

FOR SALE Pietta 1851 Yank snubnose .44

Hi Traveler. I'm trying to figure out how to do that, but I'm stuggling. Is it permittable to do it by email?

    Your first ML rifle

Mine...inherited...grandpa ordered a Thompson Renegade from the TC custom shop. He requested a checkered walnut stock with a RB twist (1:66). I've never seen another Renegade with a checkered walnut stock...but, it's gorgeous. Anyway, sometime in the late 90s he also ordered a 1: 28 twist...

    Eley wire cartridge

Could be. From what I've read about it, the slugging effect was an initial problem. Later, according to all the positive reviews from the period they apparently overcame that problem. I'm just getting back in from visiting and helping family in the coastal SC region. So, I'm hoping to start...

    How much shot

"I will increase it as high as 1 5/8 ounces for more pattern density when using larger shot for waterfowl. My 12 (a Pietta with CYL barrels) is very light, and the 1 5/8 ounce charge comes back as hard as I want, though folks load heavier in heavier guns." Hi BrownBear, I've got two Pedersoli...

    Unusual Side Hammer Rifle

Very interesting piece. Im particularly fascinated with why they would produce it with two distinctly different, yet relatively close in caliber, rifled barrels... Could it be that one barrel was re-bored later?

    LESSON FOR NEWBIE #1

Very good information. Regarding the steel used for muzzleloaders-opposed to the "stronger steel" apparently used for smokeless guns - If that's the case though, I've often wondered why muzzleloader manufacturers wouldn't just simply use the stronger steel? I've got all kinds of...

    Eley wire cartridge

I feel super stupid for asking, but how do I go about attaching pictures on this site? I would like to show some of the prototype cartridges...

    Why cushion wads?

I've not tried it unlubed, so I'm not sure what the results would be. At first, I was a little concerned about pressure loading it the Skychief way, but the more I thought about it I figured it shouldn't make much difference regarding the load sequence. Seems fine, and definitely a marked...

    Pedersoli Regulation?

They definitely make for a very fun gun. The fit and finish is not bad atleast with my two. In fact, I enjoy them so much, my cartridge shotguns rarely get much time of use anymore. To be honest, I would love to find an old original, but it' been difficult to find one in decent shape around...

    Pedersoli Regulation?

I have two, both 12 guage. One was purchased new in 2014. It has 28" barrels modified/full choke and it seems well regulated. It is, as Britsmoothy mentioned a bit heavy, but I primarily use it for dove and SCs and I find it swings well in those applications. My other Pedersoli is an older...

    Why cushion wads?

Skychief, With regards to your load fashion, the way I've normally done it is to lube the Fiber cushion wad just prior to loading and its worked well. But, I've been thinking about carrying say 10 or so in a plastic sandwich bag presaturated with veg oil when hunting to speed up loading. I...

    Why cushion wads?

You're right about that. I should correct myself. I have tried the Skychief load and it works great in one of my SXS Pedersolis with cylinder bores. It's the only loading with upland shot that I like using the cushion wad. I'm really glad he shared that load sequence because I would have had...

    Eley wire cartridge

Hmmm. I've ordered thin copper mesh I cant really measure the temper at this point but I'll give it go with what comes... Buffalo bone dust filler may be difficult to aquire no doubt, however, I thought I might try common shotshell buffer or cornmeal to keep things tight initially.

    cappers

Agreed. The Ted Cash snail capper seems to work best from my experience. The Cash, and others, straight line cappers tend to lose more outside and turnover more inside. I haven't tried the oval cappers, but the snail cappers work great.

    Eley wire cartridge

Right, no doubt, Eley achieved notoriety via Percussion caps. But, Im inclined to believe that they had must have had considerable success with the shotgun cartridge based on reading they continued to produce it well into the 20th century (and for nearly 100 years). I can understand they may...

    Why cushion wads?

I think you're right. The only time I've ever honestly found a 1/2" fiber cushion wad useful was when I shot 00 buckshot loads out of my doubles. Even then, I can't provide any evidence they improved patterns. They just "seemed" to provide a little less recoil to the heavy buckshot load. But, I...

    Why cushion wads?

Thin wad cards and a "puckerfull" of spit, as I recall reading, was the solution. For the most part, I've found his recommendations to be effective. The 1/2" fiber wad IMHO, is not only unneccessary, time & money wasteful, but even worse;detrimental to good patterns. But, there are some that...
