    Kudos to Two Feathers

I also recommend Two Feathers. Bought a knife from him recently and it’s a honey. Can’t go wrong with his work

    Care for a razor strop

I've had this strop for 30 years or so, and I've never done anything to treat it. It is still pliable and works well. I just wondered if there was anything I needed to do to keep it in good shape.

    I can’t see my sights

As I'm ending my 6th decade I have a similar problem. I have found progressive lenses to be the answer. They have a variable range which allows you to bring the sights into better focus. The other problem is the desire to be "correct" to the exclusion to a major enjoyment of this hobby. We...

    Care for a razor strop

Back when I did CW reenacting for 20 years, I carried a straight razor and used it to shave. I also carried the razor strop. I've often wondered if there is some care required in the maintenance of the leather side, such as oil or some lubricant. Also, I have never learned what the linen side...

    Flash, no bang

One of the main reasons I swab between shots is the amount of residue in the barrel after the shot. It's a lot, and I don't want to shove it to the bottom of the barrel with the next ball.

    Flash, no bang

Does anybody know if I could use either TOW mink oil or Stumpy's moose snot after cleaning the rifle as a last light swab before storing? I have both and was wondering if either would present problems when next I go shooting. Next time may be a while until I can get into JoAnn's fabrics to...

    Flash, no bang

I haven't had the chance to get back to shooting. Too much to do - had to prepare and plant my garden and do other chores around the land. I have to believe that the problem was with my cleaning. I have used Hoppes black powder cleaner and I still get a bit of flash rust no matter how I dry...

    Flash, no bang

I swab between shots for the simple reason that the residue is so thick that I don't want to push it all into the base of the barrel. I mean the residue is very thick on the swab patches. Besides, if swabbing between shots produces, now, acceptable accuracy from my rifle, why shouldn't I?

    Flash, no bang

No chance of contamination. This is a unique event with this rifle as it has always been so easy to produce ignition. Normally I only fill the pan about 1/4 and concentrate against the touch hole producing near instantaneous ignition up to now. Just wondering what might have happened.

    Flash, no bang

I ran a wipe down the bore prior to shooting and no oils were observed on the cloth. Since I am working through Dutch's shooting program, I am swabbing with Ballistol between shots. I'm using 3F black powder, same powder as I've used all along.

    Flash, no bang

    Straight into main bore.

    Flash, no bang

Yesterday was a bit frustrating at the firing line. With aggravating frequency my pan would flash but no ignition of the powder charge. On a couple of occasions I resorted to pushing powder into the liner hole with my pick to make the charge ignite. The last time I went shooting was about 4...

Best method of working up a load

Thank you to all for the advice. I have plenty here to work on and Dutch's book will be of great value from what I have read on the forum in the past.

Best method of working up a load

My question is basically, "does anyone have some good advice on how to efficiently work up the best load for my rifle". Yes, I can always go out and shoot 200 rounds to hopefully find a good one, but, I'm sure there are some basics and rules of thumb which would speed up the process. For...

    Lost patch

After a lot of trying various methods, I successfully removed the patch. Tried a undersized bronze bore brush, bristle brush and patch puller. Nope. Tried cleaning the bore. Nope. Finally after the final cleaning patch was pulled out the little wad of patch fell out. Thanks for the suggestions

    Lost patch

Placed a patch on my rod to swab the barrel. When the rod was removed, there was no patch. I tried to snag it with my coiled type of patch remover. Cannot get it out. I'm sure this has happened to someone here before, so, give me some idea of the next thing to try. The patch was lubed with...
