    First Flintlock Deer

I live between Tobyhanna and New Foundland. I was hunting public land not far from Scranton. Thanks for the kind words everyone, I'm already looking forward to next year!

    First Flintlock Deer

Sorry, I wish I knew more about the rifle. I bought it used from TOW with no real history. It was simply a nice gun for a good price. It has a 37" green Mountain barrel, 1 in 70 twist 8 groove square bottom rifling. Lock and Triggers are RE Davis The gun its self is a Christian Springs/Edward...

    First Flintlock Deer

Yesterday was the last day I would be able to hunt in the PA late season. I hunt 1 or 2 days a week but the weather hasn't been the greatest and I haven't seen a buck in a while. Friday's hunt I saw about 20 deer. We had about an inch of dry creaky snow on the ground. I was still hunting...

    Patches

Thanks for the help. I filled my buck tag today, 1st deer with a flintlock! So now I'll be concentrating on load development. He wasn't huge, but my first flintlock deer! Shot him at 50 yards and he dropped on the spot. Bullet entered just at the front of the shoulder blade and it was a bulge...

    Patches

Ok. I have calipers so I'll see what I have that is .018 or so. How do you lube the patches? Put the strip in a baggie with a squirt of ballistol? Just enough to wet it but not be dripping? Thanks!

    Patches

That makes a lot of sense if they rot over time. The patches are about 3 years old. Maybe my bore is a little tighter, but if I load a .535 ball and a .15 patch it is REALLY tight. I struggle to get it started with my ball starter, and it tears the patch as soon as it starts. Maybe with fresh...

    Patches

I'm trying to fine tune my load and ran into a dilemma. My gun has a green Mountain barrel, 1 in 70 twist .54 it seems to like 80 grains of swiss 2F. The problem is the patches are not having it. A load like 60 grains and the patches are perfectly intact. North of 70 grains and they just are...

    BP temperature sensitive?

I wonder if this would have anything to do with the way the barrel is fastened to the stock? I know on the gun I picked up, it is held by pins through tight fitting holes, not slots. I would think when the wood stock contracts from the cold it could pull on bottom o the barrel, shifting POI...

.54 Green Mountain Barrel Max Charge?

The "I was told", per the first post, was by TOW when I purchased the rifle. Not starbucks... I understand there is no guarantee of accuracy by increasing the charge. I simply want to see if I can tighten the groups up without exceeding the safe limit of the barrel. With the slow 1 in 70 twist...

.54 Green Mountain Barrel Max Charge?

Thanks everyone for the advice! Jim, I appreciate that formula, and it makes sense with everything I heard about the killing power of the .54 I will work up to 100 grains 2f and see if it tightens the groups up any. I appreciate the help and sounds like I will still have a good margin of...

.54 Green Mountain Barrel Max Charge?

I want to know the max load just so I can stay safe trying to find the sweat spot of the gun, with enough energy to get the job done. Right now, the rifle shoots the same groups from 60-80 grains, but I am sure it could shoot better. I was told 80 grains 2f was the limit, but everything I read...

.54 Green Mountain Barrel Max Charge?

I have always enjoyed flintlock hunting, but never had a decent gun. That ended this christmas, when I got a used Christian Springs rifle with a 38" Green mountain .54 swamped barrel. The gun was purchased from TOW. When I was purchasing the gun, I asked what they thought a good range of powder...
