    questions about hawkens percussion.

I have a Lyman Great Plains Hunter which is 1/32 twist and shallow rifling. It shoots bullets just fine....but It does best with a veggie wad and then felt wad then the bullet. I use the Hornady Great Plains bullet but I size them to .501 for a slip fit down the bore. If I use the bullets as...

    First shot moose

Congratulations. Glad it worked for you. Despite all the advice about popping caps before firing I have had guns that still had ignition problems. Even after several caps that would blow dirt there would still be a delay. This was after cleaning with brake cleaner, alcohol, solvents...

    First muzzleloader advice

I have a set trigger on my Lyman GPH. It is good for target use. A good single trigger is better for just about everything. The only exception is if someone sets it for too light a pull.

    First muzzleloader advice

No you are not limited to maxi type bullets. You can use PP bullets or something like the Hornady Great Plains. The PP bullets will go as far as you can shoot with the right barrel. Or, if you get a faster twist barrel there are several grease groove long distance bullets you could use as well.

    First muzzleloader advice

So, I have not seen if you really want to hunt with a PRB or conical. That alone makes a difference in which caliber to get, especially if you are thinking of going after elk or bigger. For deer a .50 would be fine, but, a .54 would be more flexible. But, if you are interested in conical then...

    Mis fires using patched ball.

I had the ignition problems with light RB loads as well as heavy conical loads (80gn with 450gn PP bullet). And, yes, there was a 'crud ring' with it when using RB as well as conical on a side lock rifle.

    Long Range Match Shooting

Unfortunately, someone is going to take your post and say, 'Fleener said inlines are much more accurate than traditional muzzle loaders.' They will miss the parts where you mention it is all due to the sights, iron vs scope. charlie

    Mis fires using patched ball.

I also had trouble with Triple 7. No matter what I did I would get hangfires, even on a fresh clean barrel. It also left a bad ring of fouling. I went to pyrodex and it all got better. I do not wipe between shots. Just load powder, PRB and shoot. I also use light powder loads because of...

    over powder card wads

I tried several methods and the one that works for me is a veggie card over powder with a lubed felt wad, then the bullet. This has improved things with PP hollow base bullets, hollow base grease bullets and flat base grease bullets. If I wipe the bore, then it is after adding powder and the...

    T/C Hawken accuracy

I agree with over powder wads. My Lyman was a 6" group rifle until I started using them. At first I just used the Oxyoke lubed wads and got groups down by almost half. Then I put a card wad on top of the powder and a the Oxyoke on top of that, then the bullet. Groups shrank a LOT. I also...

    Gibbs good shots

Just wanted to thank you for this thread. I have a Lyman Great Plains Hunter in .50cal and was trying to get the groups tighter. Mostly .492 450gn PP bullets. Tried lubed felt wads, then veggie card wads. I could get groups in the 3" range. Then I saw Ed's post and tried the veggie wad and...

    Lyman Great Plains question

I have a GPH and do what is stated above. I add one more. I use a brush (mine is brass) I think it is .32 cal brush. When I first got the gun I put it in the barrel and used a drill to spin the rod/brush and then inserted it in the breech chamber. After that I wrap a cleaning patch around...

Cap at Half cock or Full cock?

I always cap at full cock, mainly cause the guns I've had do not have enough space to do it at half cock. When I hunted I'd use one of those brass hats that go over the capped nipple. Then let the hammer down on it until ready to take a shot. At the range I set up to shoot and the last thing...

Minimum load for Lyman GP .50 cal.

I was reminded in another forum. The Lyman rifles have a patent breech with a smaller dia chamber at the rear. The powder charge should AT LEAST fill this smaller chamber. If it does not you will have an air gap, which is not good. Not sure how big the chamber is but I would bet that mine...

? about rate of twist and also barrel wedges.

I have a Lyman GPH with the shallow rifling and fast twist. Should be horrible with patched round ball. .510 groove dia, .502 bore. I use .490 ball and .010 lubed patch. And small powder charges. It really likes 30gn. My theory is that the faster twist is too much for the ball if pushed to...

    Lyman GPR or Traditions...Penn?

Depends on what you mean is "better". I've had CVA/Traditions, T/C and Lyman. If all you care about is shooting ability then any will do the job. How accurate is mostly you figuring out what shoots best out of your gun as all seem to be a little bit different as far as load, bullet/ball...

Minimum load for Lyman GP .50 cal.

My GPH likes 30gn, but, it is the faster twist.

    Lyman great plains rifle

Mine is a GPH so faster twist and shallower grooves (.510 instead of your .520) I use a .490 ball and .010 lubed patches. That means the patches fill the grooves. I can shoot 20 shots without swabbing. Tight setup takes a bit of push on the ramrod but the last shot is the same as the second.

    Lyman GPR or Traditions...Penn?

I currently have a Lyman GPH percussion, only because I got it slightly used for under $400. I love it but mostly fire conicals although it also does well with round ball at lower speeds. I've had CVA and TC rifles in the past and they are really good shooters. If what you want is to plink...
