    Browning Rifle question

Although possible, that doesn’t explain the missing raised cheek area on the stock which is a distinctive design part of the JBMR rifle?

    Browning Rifle question

Here are some comparison photos, with my JBMR always on the top and the one in question in the bottom. Both rifles have had the front and rear sights replaced and the JBMR stock has a raised cheek rest that the one in question does not, but all of the other hardware on both rifles are...

    Browning Rifle question

Did Browning make an early version of their Mountain Rifle prior to calling it a Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle? I recently purchased a .50 caliber rifle that is exactly like my Mountain Rifle, same browned furniture, pewter nose cap, ram horn on drum, single set trigger. etc. However, with...

    Which percussion ML rifle?

It goes without saying, that overall condition of each of the rifles will certainly affect their usefulness and value. Assuming all are in equal condition, the next question is how much you intend to use them as parts availability will come into play. All three are great rifles, but from a...

    Trouble Loading Second Shot

I bought a .50 cal GM drop in for my T/C many years ago from Tip Curtis. His partial advice on proper use, was to swab (once down & up) first with a damp (not wet) patch and then a dry one, between EVERY shot. Not being convenient to do in the field (unless you carry a snuff tin with some damp...

    4F Black Powder Question

I have read somewhere, that if you typically load 2f powder, but want to switch to 3f, you should reduce your load of 3f by 12 to 15% of your 2f load to achieve the same muzzle velocity (pressure). It stands to reason that a large piece of wood will burn slower than a smaller piece of wood. How...

    A Green Mountain surprise

I bought a GM .50 cal drop in for my T/C Hawken many years ago from Tip Curtis. I asked about using a .490 ball & patch combo like I had been doing and Tip told me, if I wanted the best accuracy, to use a .500 ball and .10 Teflon patching. He said to use a .50 cal Delryn starter to drive the...

What to Read during Social Isolation?

If you are interested in Mountain men and the Westward Expansion, there are two books written in the early 1900’s by a guy who lived it are: “Thirty-one years on the plains and in the mountains” and “Chief of Scouts piloting emigrants across the plains of 50 years ago”, by Captain William F...

    Mulberries

When I was young, my grandparents had a mulberry tree next to their garage. My brother and I would climb up on the garage roof and eat mulberries until our hands and faces were purple! I thought they would be great on my cereal in the morning, so I picked a whole bowl full and put it in the...

Ffg equivalents for hunting with prb.

The “rule of thumb” that I have read and use myself, is that you should REDUCE your 3f load by 15% of your 2f load to have approximately the same muzzle velocity. If your rifle shoots best with 60 grains of 2f, you would start with 50 grains of 3f and work up your exact load from there.

    T/C Hawken breach plug

I use a .50 cal brass brush with a 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 cleaning patch, I cut from old cotton t-shirt material, wrapped around the brush. I have my T/C .50 cal barrel in hot water that has a bit of Dawn dish soap added. I thoroughly wet the cotton patch on the brush and work the brush up and down...

How do I secure the ramrod in my T/C hawken?

I see T/C ramrod retainer springs including the machine screw, listed for sale on eBay all the time. Although pricey, that is an option if you want to use original T/C parts.

    Safety Question

I was watching the Laramie Miller “Sasquach - Mountain Man” TV program some time back and saw Laramie hunting elk. He had a habit of carrying his muzzleloader over his right shoulder, barrel forward, with his right hand over the front sight. He had wrapped his little finger across the front of...
