    German Apprentice Project Thread

My teenager from German has taken an interest in shooting, and in particular he fell in love with woodcock hunting. We spent the whole season on doves, partridges, quail, pheasant, ducks and woodcock with black powder shotguns. He expressed interest in putting a gun together. We talked about...

Went back to water - cleaning woes and foes

For quite a while I've been avoiding straight water cleaning of my ML's including shotguns, rifles and handguns. I've used an electronic spray cleaner through the nipple hole and some concoction, usually windex w/o ammonia, alcohol, murphy's oil soap and some slight variations. I know there's...

    White Deer

It's funny how an off-the-cuff comment can sometimes open doors and produce opportunities. We were invited to a wedding in the end of March. Someone said to another, "put that on your calendar so you won't be trying to turkey hunt". A lady came over. She asked, "you hunt turkeys"? "Uh, yeah", we...

WANTED Kit - Shotgun, rifle or handgun

Our German exchange student would like to build a gun and shoot it while he is here. Taking it home is not going to happen. I'd like to find something inexpensive that I can buy or a generous person can donate. I'd even be willing to send it back to whomever provides it this summer, completed...

Curtis and Harvey's No.4 or No. 6 Powder

Instructions with "new" gun from 1868 say 2 1/2 drams powder to 1-ounce of shot. Curtis and Harvey's No. 4 or No.6 powder should be used. Does anyone know what granulation of powder this would be in relation to what is available today?

Something Fishy going on with Pedersoli "Old English" model

If you read Pedroli's advertising, the "Old English" shotgun is 6.83 pounds, has lighter barrels and a maple stock, with a "patch-box" and architectured extended trigger guard tang. I have corresponded with Pedersoli extensively, and have received some detailed information via email about...

Load v. Bore Diameter v. velocity?

Interesting topic came up at a black powder hunt. A few Gents firmly believe the same load in a smaller bore develops more velocity than in a larger bore. They cite pressure as the reason. For example: 7/8-ounce measure of powder and shot in a 28-gauge v. same 7/8-ounce measure of powder and...

WANTED Small AGC lock(s) - older percussion lock R or L.

These are pretty small percussion locks, under 4-inches overall length. Marked AGC on them. I would like a set but will buy singles. Thanks

    WANTED Small(er) bore double shotguns

I am interested in acquiring additional 16, 20, 24, 28 or 410 SxS muzzleloader shotguns. I have one or more of each and I'm really enjoying them. Criteria is pretty straightforward, good working condition and lightweight. Antique, modern, custom build doesn't matter too much. Percussion is...

How tight to patch a ball

I have always thought, based on tons of internet information, that a tightly patched ball will provide more accuracy and velocity. I guess I've been lucky in a sense. I started with .018 patches and a ball .010 less than bore. Several .54's with .530 ball and .018 patch are accurate and have a...

    SOLD Pedersoli SxS Shotgun

I picked this one for the nicer wood with a slight reddish coloration. 12 gauge uses 12 gauge marked components. Complete set of choke tubes from factory. #11 nipples and musket cap nipples for versatility. 7 pounds 3 ounces and 14 3/8 LOP. I took it Turkey hunting 2 springs and 1 upland hunt...

Shout Out to Log Cabin Shop

I had a LH lock that decided not to stay at half cock. After a few shots it didn't stay at full cock either. I could see what needed to be done, but I do not have the size tools to do it and frankly can't spare the time. I quickly looked up a place someone had recommended for repair, and I...

    Pedersoli Proofs

I have several Pedersoli shotguns in 12 gauge. A few friends have some as well. When making some comparisons today, we noticed to newer models have "89 grains - 1 1/4-oz" stamped on them. The older ones don't say this. All have the same BP proof mark(s). Unlike smokeless proof that indicates a...

    Pedersoli shotgun malfunction

Yesterday while upland hunting my Pedersoli shotgun failed. I pulled the right hammer partially and it slipped, and I could feel something weird within the gun. I tried to cock the hammer but it would not stay at all. Went to truck and took the lock out. There were small metal pieces loose...

    First sight-in

A good friend has been interested in my muzzleloading adventures for some time and was recently gifted a ML rifle. It is a TC "Hawken" from late 70's according to who he got it from. Came with balls, bullets, powder and accessories. Rear sight is fixed and adjustable sight is in the box of...

    Rain

On a hunt far from home that cost a lot of time and money I had a few very nice opportunities to take birds well within range - what would usually be a "gimme". However, my shotgun went "snap"! It was raining. I kept the barrels pointed down, so that was not the point of entry of H2O. The musket...

    One year later ...

I've posted about this before. Most of my BP revolvers are loaded. I shoot them 2 or 3 times per year usually. Sometimes, things get in the way and it is longer between shoots. On Sunday afternoon, I took out an 1858 short barrel ACE and a 1851 that have been loaded for 14 months. The 1858 had...

    Dove Shoot Observations

For the opening 3-days of dove season I used a composed pair of what are really 13-gauge SxS ML's. When I say a pair, they are the same company, stock dimensions, barrel length - in fact they were made just 2-years apart. The one and only difference is that one is choked Sk/IM and the other is...

    Shot velocity by load

Let's say I shoot a 7/8- ounce load with a 7/8- ounce scoop of powder. Will the velocity be the same as a 1-ounce load with a 1-ounce scoop of powder? How about 1 -1/8 ounce.... All other things being the same.
