Walker Horse Pistol, Good For Squirel Hunting

Can't have more fun than hunting squirrel with a cap n ball revolver. My favorite is a 61 Navy .36, but I still have a month and a half to wait for the season to come in. Lots of summer fun, too, stalking groundhogs along the fence rows.

    my little squirrel rifle

Wow...All I can say is "gorgeous". I could look at that rifle all day.

Convince me .45 PRB is enough for deer.

A .45 with a patched .440 ball will do just fine on whitetail deer if you do your part. In 1974, when Pennsylvania began the dedicated flintlock season for deer, the .45 was established as the minimum caliber, and back then, it was the most common caliber of flintlock in the woods. A lot of...

    Linder Bowie

I have a couple of Linders. They are good quality knives, in fact, they have 2 models out right now that I am anxious to get my hands on as soon as I find someone who carries the complete line.

    Carved Spoons

I didn't know what the preferred wood might be, but, I guess I chose the right one by pure luck. I already seasoned mine with mineral oil. Hopefully that will work ok.

    Carved Spoons

The hoof knife and crooked knife do indeed appear to be very similar. The only difference apparent to me is the grip. The crooked knife has a "hook" for the thumb to go over when gripped, but I have no doubt that a hoof knife could easily double as a crooked knife for carving out a bowl, etc.

    Carved Spoons

Thanks bushytail. The knife is called a crooked knife. I think I bought this particular one from Crazy Crow years ago. If you go to http://www.oldjimbo.com/survival/ck.html there is a pretty good history and description of them.

    Carved Spoons

This was a nice week to sit in the shade and whittle. Tried this one from a piece of cherry (I think) that I found in the wood pile.

    cross draw holster

Yep...that's my problem. Too much belly and not enough butt.

    cross draw holster

I started by making a pattern out of posterboard to fit my ROA. When I got it the way I wanted it, I traced the posterboard pattern on to leather and cut it out. I couldn't decide if I wanted a shoulder rig or a crossdraw belt carry, so I made one of each. Both get used, but, for hunting I have...

    Fur, Fortune, And Empire

I just got it last week and am about a fourth of the way into it. It's a pretty good read. I was suprised at the importance of the fur trade in putting the earliest New England colonies on a firm footing. I guess I never before associated New England with the fur trade. Competition between the...
