    Full Stock Barrel Removal

I like to take things apart so I do it often, but if my rifle has been out in wet weather I feel that it is a necessity.

    Advice on getting started crafting.

I agree that Dremels are dangerous. I suspect that there are Dremel experts out there who can do a good job, but I wouldn't try it unless you are really good with it.

I would appreciate a recommendation or two regarding such books. Thanks, George

What happens When You Accidentally Shoot a Ramrod out of your gun?

I have done it several times. This is a fact of which I am not proud, but it is, nevertheless, a fact. I have only once recovered the rod. It was broken but still in one piece. I learned two quite surprising things from the event. 1, I found the rod about ten yards behind the 40 yard...

    Had not noticed this before....

A lot depends on how clean you want your rifle. I guarantee that if you clean with water only, or even water with some detergent, and then run a tight fitting patch down into that small diameter area, it will come out with some black stuff on the patch. It is highly unlikely that little bit of...

How to remover stuck touch hole liner?

I think curiosity is a good enough reason to take out a touch hole liner.

Curious, How do you clean your Pinned barrel Rifle or Smooth bore?

I have acquired rifles that looked very nice and had very good bores, but when I removed the barrel it looked as if it had never been taken off. The invisible part of the barrel was very rusty and otherwise crud covered. I am very much bothered by such rust even if you can't see it.

What makes a good patch knife?

I am sure that it is definitely not period correct, but I like to use a single bevel blade to cut my patches. One can lay the unbevelled side of the blade flat against the muzzle and slice. It is convenient and easy, and I think the edge stays sharp longer.

Carolina Gun build / canoe length

I can't understand why any one would want a gun as long as a canoe, even if it was a very short canoe.

    Round barrels?

Oregon Barrel Co. advertises both round and tapered round barrels. I have only one of there barrels (not round) but it is a very good barrel. Their barrels are sold through The Gun Works. [www.thegunworks.com]

What "fun" targets are your fav's

My favourite FUN target is a piece of paper with a solid black spot in the centre.

I can only hope that most of these patch cutting comments are intended to be humorous.

It,s a pretty dull flint if it wont cut through a film of oil.

    Chewed roundball

I have read that in the old days and lead was scarce a ball retrieved from a game animal would be chewed round and shot again.

    SOLD Hudson Bay Camp Knife

I had not heard the term Hudson's Bay Camp knife until now. I have a knife that is almost a twin to the one pictured. I have no memory of where, how or why acquired it. I probably inherited it at some point. My knife is 14 inches long with a 9 inch blade. The blade is stamped UNWIN &...

    Cleaning in the field

In my opinion if you slather enough oil on it, no harm will come to it for quite a long period of time until you can clean it properly. It will be quite a mess, but no harm will come to it.

    Camping off a mule?

I have owned a few horses in my day, and have done a fair amount of horse camping, but I have always thought that a riding mule would be really great. At 90 years of age I am not likely to get around to it, but who knows? The mule probably wouldn't care how old I was.
