    DP 12 Bore Double Rifle

Tomorrow I'm going to let the monster spit some fire and lead! I already prepared 12 gauge wads and patches and lubed them with 60% beeswax / 40% tallow. The patches are a little too small in size (not thickness) so I'll have to be extra careful when centering the patch on the ball, but things...

    Traditions Woodsman Hawken arrival

Nice hog and good shooting! :hatsoff: I have a buddy who owns a couple of traditions made rifles and they all shoot excellent despite the ''not so great'' reputation.

    DP 12 Bore Double Rifle

Recoil isn't so bad, with round ball and 140 grains of swiss 2FG it kicks like my .69 1847 Springfield rifled musket .69 shooting 720 grain miniès with 70 grain 3FG. A slow, long and hard punch. I used to have a 6lbs single shot shotgun and with shotgun slugs it was just vicious. It was not...

    DP 12 Bore Double Rifle

What is it with those classic Arnold one-liners? And in the case any of you is wondering about my English accent - yes, I do sound a lot like Arnold. I also have a lot of muscle. :hmm:

Thanks, your compliments make my rifle blush!

    DP 12 Bore Double Rifle

This is the Safari Express in .72, both barrels rifled. As far as I know, until a few years ago they built the Kodiak in .72, but they changed some things and from then on they called it the Safari Express. The Kodiak's are now produced in .50, 54 and 58, the .72 model is exclusively called the...

    DP 12 Bore Double Rifle

Thanks guys! Yes, it weighs around 13 lbs! Double the gun, double the fun! Also double the weight.

    DP 12 Bore Double Rifle

So I finally had time to take my rifle out to make a few good pictures.

    Pedersoli double rifle .72cal

Shot the rifle today. I have to say the recommended patch and ball combination for this gun (.715 ball with a .10 patch) is very VERY tight. I had to start it with a hammer and ram it down with repeated blows. I was certain the patch would be totally torn apart from this brutal loading...

    Pedersoli double rifle .72cal

@ frogwalking I live in Austria, around here hunting with any kind of muzzle loading gun is strictly prohibited. You're only allowed to take large game with modern center fire rifles with optical sights because any other weapon -including bows- is deemed unethical. :idunno: :barf:

    Pedersoli double rifle .72cal

Keeping the woods clear of T-rex falls under community service around here. Another shot from the business end:

    Pedersoli double rifle .72cal

Holy wow! T just got my double rifle and its way bigger than I expected. I thought it would handle and feel like a beefy 12 gauge side by side but its on a whole nother level. :shocked2:  My 12 gauge SxS looks almost fragile next to it. Overall I'm very impressed, the gun is...

The Bess is a very fine gun, you're going to have a lot of fun! :hatsoff:

    Harpers Ferry .58 accuracy issue

Thanks for the replies! I'll tell him about your suggestions! Yes, my friends gun also has the rusty rough spot about halfway down the bore, what a strange coincidence. :hmm: Sadly I don't know how it loads, that would probably tell a lot more about the condition of the bore than just looking...

    69 caliber 720 grain miniè

I shoot 720 grain miniés out of my .69 rifled 1842 with 65 grains of Swiss 3FG, recoil feels about like a 12 gauge buckshot load. Not terrible even from the bench if you don't totally lean into it. The total bullet weight of Buck and ball loads out .69 muskets were about the same I guess...

    Harpers Ferry .58 accuracy issue

Hello! Actually its not me who needs help, I'm asking for a friend of mine: He got an Italian made Harpers Ferry in .58 and has lots of problems with it. He has years of experience with shooting muzzle loaders and he is a good shot but out to even 50 yds he can barely hit the 3x3ft target with...

    Oiling Barrel after cleaning

Actually it was a good friend of mine who did the test, I have not searched for any other tests with WD40 but I'll look into it. I'm sure its not the best protective oil out there, but its doing its job because if weren't I'd have rusty guns by now.

    Oiling Barrel after cleaning

I have seen a test where steel plates were put outside exposed to the elements for two weeks. One was covered with a layer of engine oil (I think it was 5W40), one with a layer of WD40, another one with grease and the last one was a control plate left outside without any protection at all...

    Oiling Barrel after cleaning

Never had any rust in or on any of my muzzleloader rifle barrels, except once, and that was when I used hot water to clean one of my rifled muskets barrels. About 5 minutes into the cleaning with hot water I noticed dark spots appearing around the muzzle area of the polished white steel...

    54 vs 50...any real advantage?

IMO there is a benefit of going larger in diameter with a conical-only rifle, but the advantage is ony felt on the range and not when hunting. Bigger bores foul less - if I wanted a rifle for slinging heavy conicals I'd still pick a .50 over a .45. Maybe even the .54. Nobody likes wiping...
