    Elk or Venison?

I'd heartily agree about the age issue as I'm reminded of a CO mulie buck (6x8 point count)that weighed in at around 400# dressed, hide-head-hoofs off back in the '60s that had enough fat along the back and sides there was no getting around the fat deposit on the roof of the mouth on eating it...

    Elk or Venison?

Living near one of Ted Turners ranches means we see buffalo in the local stores a fair bit, tends to be 1.5x the price of the same cut of beef. Been toying wit the idea of getting a tag but they only allow something like 25 for the state draw. Theres a few places that'll let ya take one fer...

    Elk or Venison?

Im not too particular, but Elk and venison are the berries. Wont touch little brown crane (tastes like swamp) and only eat crow when I have to... Keep yer powder dry, D.

    Tall Trees Rendezvous

Tall trees is one of the vous I routinly attended when living in CA (been 8 yrs since I moved). The location is probably one of the best places Ive been to, the walk and the other shoots were challenging. Shinin' times yessireebob! Keep yer powder dry, D.

SO ? What is your personal AREA, ort AREAS or Interest

Havent done the Living history thing, then Im a bit ADD so my interests vary from time to time. Do kinda prefer the making of stuff overall with a secondary in the competition. On cold MT nights when the garage its a tad brisk then its off to read and ponder on what folks did back when. Keep...

Nuthin' like a good piece of hicory...

On the break it down note, "the rest of the story" is that because of the break I was sans method fer cleaning said toy. We bop down to the local sporting goods purveyor in a panic and what do we find? Taint nothin' that'll clean a 36" barrel, plenty of 31.5 in various calibrations. Serendipity...

Nuthin' like a good piece of hicory...

Ok so Im out praticing my off hand with my Hawken and as Im pulling the rod out after a cleaning swipe, snap goes the rod in a greenstick break.:shocked2: The issue? None really given that the rod was over 15 yrs old (hence the topic name)...but a reminder to those that use traditional gear to...

    weighting in on volume

Dunno but while I use the measure for all my ML stuff but measure then weigh everything for my BPCR stuff. Might add that I use Goex for both. Im a tad surprised that folks hadnt brought up the fact one DOES NOT weigh Pyrodex or the others substitutes due to the density difference issues...

    Nipple Shields

Been my experience that iffen the hammer is built right (reasonably deep pocket with room for the cap to expand), one really doesnt need a shield except mebee to protect the stock some (if that). My T/C does "OK" with the caps during detonation but my homebuilt Hawken with an L&R seems to do a...

    Ticks / Sleeping / Tents

Sorta depends on where ye set yer tent up in my experience. Ye set up in a grassy field and I'll gurarantee one will find its way in during set up. Usually that one bein' the one that makes ye itch the rest of the night... They're kinda interesting little critters ta watch. They climb to the...

Moch obliged fer the responses. We'll check out both the ideas and the links posted. By my figgerin' I should be able to get both a new cover and the uppers fer a new set of 2 pc mocs out of 1 hide.Somthin' Ive been meaning to do fer a spell as the old moc soles are a tad perforated from...

    Elk hides?

Given my apparent lack of expertise/ability to down the "ghost of the woods" (AKA wapiti) anybody happen to know a sutler that sells elk hides that arent dyed yellow-orange. Have a desire to build a rifle case for a new toy and dont want to use rawhide or buckskin and really DONT want...

Felt Recoil: Black Powder vs. Smokless

Pressure spike is higher and quicker with smokeless. Higher chamber pressures translate to a higher force to the rear (recoil) like other folks have noted. BUT the other thing I notice not mentioned is that a typical Traditional big game ML tends to weigh a tad more than a smokeless...

    Twist rate question

IIRC but I believe the all the original Hawkens were 1:48 from their factory in St Louis and Denver. That sorta says something (iffen only that their bench was set up for it). My .50 TC is 1:48 and with a 75 gr load of 2f seems to put the balls in the same place as my 1:70 Green Mt. on my...

    BP on NRA indoor ranges

Then again it can be "other" issues like one range in SF that put the kaibosh on BP use due to the sparks igniting unburned smokeless and going "POOF" up and down the range... :shocked2: :haha: Keep yer powder dry, D.

    75 or 85 Grains?

75 is way too light for a critter that can weigh up to 1000 lbs on the hoof and tough as nails. Better to be in the 90+ 2f range as its more probable that you'll see them at 100+ yds than 75 and the extra ommpf wont hurt iffen you get a chance at 75... Keep yer powder dry and good...

    Common misconception or .....

Id agree with this...I run a .495 and a .02 patch in my Green Mt barrel which is actually loose according to Green Mt specs for what they bore and rifle at. My T/C uses a .495 and a .015 but only cuz its also vintage '76 and has had roughly 10000 rounds through it. Its been my observation that...

    "Black" finish on maple

Sounds *real* familiar... My 1st Hawken is like that but the stripes (P+ curly maple) are that golden brown which really accent it and folks comment about how "old" it looks... Keep yer powder dry, D.

    Hawken Butt Plates

Cant 100% agree with this. I do believe that the eye location is actually more a function of the drop in the stock which unfortunately requires a decent fitment to yield something that gives both proper plate placement AND correct eye alignment without becoming a cortortionist. Unfortuantely...

At which age did you start muzzleloading?

Picked up a T/C .50 cal for deer (IIRC right around '76) when CO started their ML season. I was out deer hunting and met a gent on the hill and asked how things were, whereupon he indicated that he hadn't seen anything but got off a couple noise shots... :cursing: After that my objective was...
