William Briggs, Norristown, Pennsylvania Underhammer percussion shotgun

This is a very simple design shotgun, an Underhammer with the hammer also being the hammer spring. https://www.bidsquare.com/online-auctions/pook/william-briggs-norristown-pennsylvania-underhammer-percussion-shotgun-12-gauge-514585 This one is a shotgun, but you could use it in a rifle.

German Hooked Breech plug and tang

I have searched for a Jaeger Hooked Percussion breech and can find none. What can I use to make one out of? Or should I just go for an English Sporting Rifle? I want a full stock with a Swamped 31-32" barrel, 62 or 69 cal. I found a German Flint to Percussion conversion lock that has a...

    Boxlock Ignition improvements

This is on a Boxlock, but others are similar. By just adding some taper or coning to the powder canal ignition should improve. How deep, well how deep can you get. Just stay away from the out side of the channel, Don't make it any thinner. Also using a drop tube to load will pack the canal.

Trap door ideas for half stocks

Wesson's and Underhammer's have a bolt thru the stock, why not use the hole for a patch box? Need something easy to build, that would open and close easily. It would not have to be round. The butt plate may just be a piece of flat stock 1/8" with rounded edges and a curve thru the...

How much Gun for Big Game? or How Little!

Lets talk about guns for Elk and Moose and such. This is not about my gun is bigger than yours. Just think of how many deer have been shot with a modern 12 ga Foster slug, millions? A 1 ounce slug at 1600 fps. Now, would you shoot a Elk or a Moose with a 1 ounce slug at 1600 fps. I have...

Hard to fire lower barrel help

Hard to fire lower barrel? I have a barrel with a long skinny passage to the nipple. With the nipple removed and pour powder into the barrel, nothing shows up at the nipple. You can drop, tap or hit the barrel and it helps. I have a 3/8” brass tube that I am going to use as a ram rod. I...

58 Carleton Rifle is getting closer.

One of my home made creations. Like my 69 Underhammer, this Carleton rifle needs a stock, also. It has a 58 F.C.I. Alexander Henry style rifling with a 1-90 twist. Another high powered rifle for hunting big game. I chose the style rifling for it's narrow lands. Much like Forsyth rifling...

    .69 Underhammer is getting closer

I have been working on this for a while. I made the brass receiver out of round bar stock. Just breech pugged it and tapped the nipple. Reshaped the stock trigger spring. Barrel is a Gun Works .69 cal with a very slow twist, 29"s long. This is a full power hunting gun, not a target...

My 7 Ga. likes 1F better than 2F with some loads. Just wondering if anyone has used Cannon grade powder [Goex makes some] in the large bores shooting birdshot?

Finally Jug Choked the 7 bore

Been putting it off for about 10 years now, but finally set he barrel up in my 1937 Southbend lathe. I cut .015 a side on a 3" taper, then 4" of back bore, into a slight taper. So I have .030 constriction, that should make it modified. Only test fired 2 shots of copper plated # 6 shot. Both...

    Tapered Paper Cartridges

Roger Renner from the Underhammer Blog Spot asked me to write an article on using and making Tapered Paper Cartridges with round balls. So I tried to show how to make a mandrel for rolling, and get the correct bore to paper fit. I started with larger calibers. .62 to .73 cals. But then there...

Looking for pictures of a over under mule ear rifle. Did a search, but couldn't find any. :( I have seen one,.........some where. Thinking about building a double rifle.....69 or 73 cal.........a Big Bore Bear Blaster. A side by side would mean two locks and soldering ribs, thought a side...

    Underhammer Updates

Drilled and tapped two barrels today, also made the breech plugs. One is a .54 fast twist, going to finish about 27"s, the other is a .58 round ball shooter that will probably get cut to 29"s. Just started to turn the .54 on the lathe, should finish at 1" x 15/16, the same for the .58. The ole...
