Penny For Your Thoughts? Pawn Shop Find.

Setting the trigger before cocking to fire was not uncommon on target rifles. I have a Tingle made in the late 60s that way.

    Patches

You have lots of questions. You may want to do a search of this site and read some of the previous threads discussing patches and lubes. Try to find something that works well with your gun. Often times changing the lube or patch material will change the accuracy of your rifle. If I’m just...

Missouri Chert Flint verses English Flint. Which is more reliable ?

I pick up chert occasionally here in Kansas. I pay more attention to the quality of the stone than to the color. It varies from dark gray to almost ivory. I look for stuff that is dense and smooth/slick looking. I don’t know how to better describe it. If it is a broken piece I check for good...

    DIY Percussion Caps

Why not list them in the classifieds section. That is the appropriate place.

    Crossfire Question

I use homemade wads cut from Duracell or leftover wool from old wool blanket projects. I punch them out with a cheap Harbor Freight punch. Mine, lubed with a melted mix of lard, bees wax and parafin. Lamb’s tallow was recommended in the recipe I found years ago but I didn’t have access to any...

    Gun Value

I’ll add, most of the 1858 Remingtons I see at gun shows are price around $300. Maybe &50-75 more depending on the show. Occasionally a little less.

    Help identifying this old barrel

The screw on the sight looks like it is screwed into a dovetail. It may have been added later in the life of the barrel. Maybe a fix for an older broken sight. Might be something from after 1900 to but the barrel doesn’t have look of being from the modern era. How long is the barrel and what is...

    Cleaning the .32 Kentucky. oops!

QC issues aren’t only a modern problem. My first 22 bought new in the 1950s had to be sent back because it had a bad barrel.

    Help identifying this old barrel

I don’t think the rifling and muzzle look modern. Also, not many of the modern replicas were made in 36 caliber range. It may be from a late percussion rifle made around or after the civil war.

Salvaging wool from grubby motheaten blankets?

If you want cedar chips, go to a pet store and get a bag of cedar used as bedding for hamsters etc. I just put the bag in the chest of closet. It helps keep moths away. Not as good as a cedar chest or closet but it helps.

Salvaging wool from grubby motheaten blankets?

I’ve washed wool in the washing machine using pet shampoo. It doesn’t remove all the natural oils. Woolite works too. If I want the material filled I dry them. If not line dry or spread out flat somewhere. I’d be hesitant to use mothballs unless you don’t mind the scent for almost forever.

    Gardening ..again

You may be a little late is south Texas but if you have the room why not. I haven’t grown potatoes for years but they don’t need to be deep, just an inch or two. One year we planted them on the side of the hills made with a corn lister and just covered them with straw. It worked well and not a...

    Old Caps-Are these corrosive?

I still occasionally shoot some old CVA caps in the plastic container from the late 70s and they work okay. I’m sure they are corrosive but like Mike said I don’t worry about it because I have to clean the gun anyway. I normally pull the nipple and drop it in a small container of water with a...

    Smooth bore recoil?

The equal force in opposite directions assumes a vacuum I believe. Also friction enters the equation. If one gun uses a greased patch and another a dry patch and all else is equal there is probably a difference in recoil although it is likely negligible in terms of what is felt. Now if I use a...

So I got this 2 muskets at the auction for cheap

Several years ago I looked at a percussion rifle at a local pawn shop with cheek rests on both sides. If I remember right it was late percussion era half stock. Probably made in the late 1840-50s or even after the civil war. It was decent but they wanted too much for it. It was gone after a week.
