normal/safe for someone who only has a percussion rifle to keep loaded without the cap for home def?

Hickok liked to shoot just as much as we do. I'm pretty certain he shot daily or frequently enough that it was noticed by others. It's not like he was sitting there with a hammer and punch unloading his pistols. He was plinking / target shooting them.

Pietta 1858 Stainless Remington nipple replacement suggestions?

I think the caps back then were heavier construction. The ultimate cap jam prevention for open top Colts is the addition of a Cap Rake. The J-Bar 1/4 cap rake is on my to do list: This is a variation of this DIY Cap Rake: http://www.theopenrange.net/articles/colt_cap_and_ball.pdf

Pietta 1858 Stainless Remington nipple replacement suggestions?

Lots of reviews out there on other boards and youtube but mostly related to open top Colt revolvers. I believe they are vented (holes on the side of the nipple) which is supposed to help the cap fragment better? I've been tempted to try them but haven't yet.

Pietta 1858 Stainless Remington nipple replacement suggestions?

I have good luck with Pietta Nipples and Remington #10 Caps. Cabela's has them in stock @ $25 for a set of 6. https://www.cabelas.com/product/Pietta-Black-Powder-Revolver-Nipples/705221.uts I bought 5000 Rem #10 caps from Midsouth Shooters Supply...

So what is the big difference between using actual BP and pellets?

Pellets are good for new shooters. They simplify the loading process and make charging a revolver or percussion rifle a smidge faster. I started with them and still have a tub floating around the house.

So what is the big difference between using actual BP and pellets?

Biggest difference is price. Pellets are sold to people that don't know better or haven't done the math. If you're shooting a C&B revolver with Pyrodex pellets, which are 30gr pellets, you're looking at about $20 a tub of 100. $0.20 / pellet A pound of powder has 7000gr in it. I use a 30gr...

Pietta 1851 Navy cylinder does not rotate when cocking?

Friend of mine received a Pietta 1851 Navy from the last Cabela's sale that also came with a broken trigger bolt spring. I also bought my Pietta 1851 Navy during that sale (June or July 2018). Since I work overseas, and really wanted to shoot this gun on my last vacation, and as a preventative...

    My French Dueling Pistol!

Beautiful guns Gentlemen. I suffer from a similar malady. I like having pairs of revolvers. For now they are all shooters but some day there will be wooden cases and accouterments to put them on display.
