    What's your Moose Milk mixture

Original mixture from 1968 I got from an old timer at Friendship was 1 oz Lestoil, 2 oz peroxide, 1 oz water soluble oil and 16 oz water. Patch lube for match shooting, bore cleaner, and shotgun wad soaker.

What's the one muzzleloader you regret parting with most?

My replica Zouave that I fitted out with a Numrich 7 groove NSSA approved barrel. Set a record in 50 yard musket offhand match at Friendship (lasted six months), set it up with on and off aperture sights and won more than a few 50 yard bench and cross sticks matches at local clubs. Base gun...

    Considering quitting!

What do you need? You were not very specific. Someone here probably can help.

Thinking of buying a muzzleloading shotgun. Are there still supplies?

Forgot to answer your question. Wads, Circle Fly. Shot, where you're lucky enough to find it. Caps, right now kind of hard to get. Try to use real black if the gun is solid and safe to shoot. The real ones deserve that respect.

Thinking of buying a muzzleloading shotgun. Are there still supplies?

I have one very similar to yours. Bought it in the late sixties. Hunted, shot trap and skeet, up until I looked down the bore with a bore scope. Severe erosion at the breech area on both barrels. Retired it to the display category. Check yours carrefully. Mine was 12 ga on one side, 13 on...

    Greetings from Illinois

Washington, IL, shooting since 1956, black powder since 1968. Not much lately.

    Yes or No on tacks

I have an original H.Leman, Lancaster, PA, 38 cal "squirrel" rifle, pewter nose cap, pewter cap box that supposedly came out of a reservation in OK over sixty years ago. It has tacks but I don't know when they were put on. It really hurts the overall simplicity and looks. I vote NO.

    My original is 38 Cal.

Why Do You Not Shoot In Line Matches?

I have found, over 65 years of shooting, that if I want to get better I need to have skin in the game. Competition gives you something to measure against. I threw a ton of lead downrange with my musket and did learn how to load, hold and shoot it for accuracy. Competing taught me patience...

    Alternate Hawken options

I have an original Henry Leman Lancaster Pennsylvania halfstock percussion rifle. Pewter nose cap, dst, cap box, 38 Cal, 38" 15/16 barrel. Old brazed repair to hammer. My prize.

    Alternate Hawken options

Many originals have a brass plate inlet just where they had been carried over the saddle.

    Mowrey Gun Works

Had one in 12 gauge. Lock design didn't provide enough impact, or just lousy springs, backplate was totally wrong for a shotgun. Glad it is gone.

    Buying A Used MuzzleLoader.

I have long given up caring whether a TC is, or can even be, a true Hawken. Waste of what brain cells I still have in my fourth quarter. I am stunned no one has mentioned JB bore paste. I have saved several "oh, no, it's ruined" barrels with judicious and energetic lapping with the stuff...

Help with refinishing my muzzle crown

I still want to see 1/4" at 100 yards, regardless of what it was.

1/4" at 100 yards? Elaborate, please.

    Browning Mountain Rifle

I had one for a few years. Well made, deep groove barrel, "live" browning as it would rust at the drop of moisture two counties over. Accurate. Only problem was that the single set trigger would not stay adjusted. I replaced it with a double lever double set trigger and never looked back...

    Cannon from a post Pounder

Every issue, it seems, has some dangerous or irresponsible article in it. A recent one had an article from a frequent contributor on his homemade muzzle loaders, most of which featured pipe barrels. Another disputed the wisdom of carrying old style single actions with an empty chamber under...

Can the need to swab be fixed?

Our formula, back in the late sixties, was an ounce each of water soluble oil, Lestoil, two of hydrogen peroxide and sixteen ounces of water. Even soaked fiber wads in it for trap and skeet shooting. In my .58 I used a .070 20 gauge card wad over the powder. Match shooting where every point is...

    Minnie ball accuracy?

I shot a lot of it back in the day. I made a paper patch bullet mould but made the plug too thin and the skirt blew out, never made a new plug as I had developed the round ball load. I used fffg in shotguns for a while also but found ffg easier on the shoulder in a long day of trap/skeet...

    Round balls

I used that Zouave for many things. I built a bracket from angle iron and mounted it to the tang so I could put on a Redfield receiver sight, put a base on the front for a Lyman 77 front and shot it in our local bench rest matches. Much complaining but it was legal as it was round ball...
