Rocks will make a workable flint

Near me in Pennsylvania is a rock called Jasper that was used by natives for arrowheads, it works as a gun flint. I haven’t found many other rocks around here that will produce a spark.

    Roundball Nirvana !!!!!!!!!

I've been trying to work up an accurate load for my 24ga trade gun. I shoot from a "lead sled" and use a temporary rear site, so that I can be sure I'm measuring the true gun performance. So frustrating that once in awhile I'll get three to five shots "clover leaf" at 25 yards thinking I found...

    Roundball Nirvana !!!!!!!!!

If you go out on three different days with the same exact load, how close can you replicate the results? I've been fooled by my smoothie to get a bunch of close shots thinking I found the magic recipe, only to realize it's just random probability and can't be replicated on demand.

    Best Period Military Musket

Would the blacksmith have to use steel made from manual mining techniques in a period 17th forge, using charcoal from "old growth" timber processed in 17th century charcoal pits by guys wearing period clothing and a Monmouth cap? Or could they use modern steel made in a modern forge with raw...

    Found THE load!!!

Very nice! I too am trying the perfect load for accuracy. I thought I had it, and then when I went out another time the group wasn't as good as the first time. Are you finding consistency between the days you shoot?

    Burnt flint normal?

I tried heating with an oxy/acetylene torch. At first it flakes like crazy with little chips flying off. But once that settles down, it does indeed melt like glass. However it requires more than a few seconds which is more than it endures during a shot being fired.

    Burnt flint normal?

So where did the corner of the flint go? It didn't sheer off because the edge is rounded and smooth (until I knapped it) and even still it further rounded and smoothef after more shooting. The melting point of flint is 1750C and the combustion temperature of BP is 2350C. So why is this...

    Burnt flint normal?

Maybe it's just "erosion" but there was a "blob" on the tip preventing the rest of the edge from hitting the frizzen. Here are two pictures of the flint after knapping the "blob" off and shooting a few more times. The white scale is very hard and bubbly....Maybe the blob wasn't melted flint...

    Burnt flint normal?

My smoothbore has an 0.065" touch hole and Davis lock. Using English flints the other day I got 45 shots without an issue, and then it wouldn't spark. I noticed the left edge of the flint melted into a glob that prevented the sharp edge from striking the frizzen so I knapped it off and it was...

    Barrel length question...

Period texts claimed the standard smooth bore was three feet eight inches long because longer barrels will produce more velocity for a given charge. One experiment around 1800 even used an eight foot barrel. But the trade off is weight and wieldabity. Then around 1820 texts claimed a decent...

Lock will go off half cocked.. baffled???

This is good to know. I wouldn't say there's excessive force when pulling the trigger, but I tried the hang test and it will not go off under its own weight. This got me thinking about the mechanical advantage of the trigger and I realized I can get it to go off out of the sock if I really...

Lock will go off half cocked.. baffled???

Most of the stock removal I had to do (with the blacken procedure) was the sear hole. The sear was pushing on the side of the hole when half cocked (because as was noted the sear moves down further than in full cock). But it sets in there pretty free now.

Lock will go off half cocked.. baffled???

Hammer will not fall either half cock or full cock when I push on it, in or out of the stock. No, I did not build this gun. I bought it from someone who was the second owner himself and didn't know much about it.

Lock will go off half cocked.. baffled???

I've spent the past couple weeks reading about locks (flinter) and doing some work on mine. It's a Davis and works really well, but I can cause the hammer to fall if I pull on the trigger hard enough(single, no set). Hammer won't fall when out of the stock. So.... There was some rubbing and...

    The eight shot group.

I recall years ago when I played paintball with big roundish gelatin balls traveling about 250fps, the precision wasn't great. You could watch the balls go somewhat straight and then wildly deflect down range. If a ball burst in the barrel (getting the paint on the inside of the barrel) any...

Are you shooting round balls with he sprue still present, or rounded off?
